Lenses in VR

I have some basic understanding of how lenses work, but I don't really know any relations between the properties of lenses and how that translates to stereoscopic displays, e.g. lens type (biconvex / frensel), focal length, magnification -> display width, display distance, FOV, IPD, etc.

I'm looking at creating my own HMD and having an understanding of how far away or how big I need the display to be is crucial to the design.

Display: Maximum display width per eye is 3 cm per eye between eye and nose for a minimum ipd of 60 mm. From eyecenter to side by side a display could be between 30mm (between eye and nose) and 60mm (depending how big your hmd will be).

Lenses: Ideal lens is PLANO convex with the flat side to the observer.

focal distance: try 40mm and dia 40mm, note: if you use glass you hmd will be a bit heavier.

Most products are found at Edmund Optics (also for private consumers)
For plastic lenses there are other shops. Some users can make it themselves, it is softer than glass.
