My girlfriend said if I get one of these and start watching particular films with it, the kind yuri might like to see on this - that she is leaving me :( I need the community's help - what should I do - trade the girlfriend in or no? I mean she is great and all, but just one simple lady, I could have a new girlfriend every night on this technology eh? Neil please help - I am torn.

Its going to be quite some time before anything like that will be available on the consumer market. Plus there is no guarantee said movies would be available, I wouldn't dump your girlfriend just yet.

While on the topic, I really want that chair from The 6th Day. That was too cool.

I take offense to that. Anyhow I'd pick your girlfriend over this device as well because it operates by using spinning wheel thingies and able to reproduce only the most basic monochromatic 3d images= very bad force feed back, basically you put your finger in and no more finger and/or 3d device.

BTW, this is not a hologram, but a volumetric display. There's a difference.

Please forgive me Yuri, I never meant to offend the creator of the best youtube show, I am so so sorry. I don't understand why you would take offense though, showing movies like "monsters, Inc., Shrek, Bolt, Journey to the Center of the earth, and Baby Geniuses in 3d on this volumetric display would bring a new girl over every night to see their favorite films in this format. Why do those nice films offend you? :)

Cyber-reality - I was thinking specifically of THX1138 where Robert Duvall watches his 3D entertainment and then his girlfriend gets so mad she gets him to start taking pills and gets him in big trouble with the law. Girlfriends have done that to a lot of my friends so I think I will have to let her go before she gets me in trouble.

ohh sorry by "particular films" I thought you meant porno, especially since "your girlfriend would be offended by them", that's why I made that assumption. Not that I don't watch it I just found it offensive people automatically assumed I did :) anyhow sorry for the misunderstanding. Yeah journey to the center of the earth was awesome in 3d on the iz3d, you can read my mini review on this thread:

shrek was amazing in 3d as well. Though did you watch the rest in an IMAX/realD theater?

"your girlfriend would be offended by them"

Yuri "free your mind" from the gutter! Geordi Laforge from star trek was told he would go blind if he watched that garbage as a child and look what happened to him! You can get addicted to that stuff, I have read several articles from psychologist saying that is very very dangerous.

Yah she thinks she is too ubercool and fashionable to watch silly films like shrek and bolt and baby geniuses, and 3d stuff is only for loser geeks. She says everytime she watched one of the films that she felt like loyd from dumb and dumberer and had brain drain and wasted hours of her life. She gets offended too easily, way too serious for me. Most regular girls here really like shrek and monsters and baby geniuses type films though from what I see. I am betting most will like Bolt in 3d too.

Yah I really liked journey too, no one got that stereoscope joke when I saw it at the theater. Not even me :( I have imax and reald both close by but Journey was only playing at the Reald theater. Which have you heard is better - Imax3d with the polar express is still the pinnacle for me. Tom hanks, christmas, 3d, what more could you want to take a nice girlfriend too?

I know reald is 144fps, but I don't remember how much Imax is - which one have the higher s3d resolution, contrast ration, brightness? Bolt in 3d with hannah montana and john travolta is coming soon and I wonder if it will be at both the imax and reald cinema? Last night I saw quantum of solace and they had some 3d preview for a tim burton like film about some girl trapped in a spider web alternate universe - caroline or something like that - it was uber cool cause the guy that plays THE PC dude from those mac commercials is going to be in it.

It had a lot of action, A LOT, more than any other bond film I could remember (I am getting old though!), this bond is really hard core and tuff and gritty. I am sure the younger people in the theater got a real adrenaline rush from it. Some of the people I was with liked it, some didn't - they say they liked the older bonds who were more stealthy and refined and not lots of action and fighting all the time. Some said it reminded them of that jason stathom guy from Transporter movies.

The actions sequences were all filmed really nicely though, the color and scenery and settings were excellent I thought. The characters were interesting, but I don't remember seeing Q, they must have cut him from this film. The end was confusing for me though, it was like they took a 3 hour movie and edited it down to 2 hours and left some stuff out that you needed to fill in the plot and flesh out some of the minor roles. Some of my friends thought they removed some of the story to trump up the action parts and that is why they didn't like it. I am a gadget guy myself and this movie didn't have a lot of neat little gadgets.

Overall one of the better films I have seen this year(though I have seen very few because I think the offerings have been drab), and if you like great choreography and lots of action you should like this film - this bond is really kickbutt kind of guy, but it is not my favorite bond film. It would have been much better in 3D, some of the action sequences would have been amazing with some 3d thrown in.

Of course the most important question is always the bond girl, I really liked daniel craig's ruthlessness, but the bond girl was forgettable. In fact I think I already forgot her. who?

Oh one more thing, I couldn't help but all through the movie remembering how many times certain things had already been done in previous bond movies or other major films I have seen, this is not particular to this film, everything has already just been done so much there is no real innovation. Certain scenes I saw timothy dalton or pierce brosnan reruns and kept wishing they had made the movie 3d to add a new element to the same tired stunts.

Go see it, but see the early show and save a couple dollars. This film aspired to be "body of lies", but fell short. I like body of lies much better.

Well, to answer the concerns poised in the OP post, I think that if your girlfriend can't accept that you're different in one single regard, she isn't someone worth dating. HOWEVER (see disclaimer below!)
  • If you know deep inside that it's your SELF to blame, for example you've obsessed over 3D technology to a point where you lock yourself up in a room time-to-time and ignore her existence, then yeah, she has right to leave you and you have right to leave her.
  • On the other hand, you ARE looking at an object that represents non-mainstream technology... technology that I would consider "enthusiast." Some people wouldn't take kindly to someone who looks as if they're "obsessing" over new technology. I actually don't agree with this argument, because one should always be open to new ideas in life, technology-related or not.
Ultimately, man, the breakup/not-breakup is up to you. But I really think you should pursue things that make YOU happy. Some things in life come with sacrifice -- this is the very essence of ANY sort of economic theory, even human economics. On the other hand, maybe you'll conclude that the sacrifice isn't worth it, and that you should keep your lady.

Up to you man.

Cellist thank you for your heartfelt and concerned response, I greatly appreciate it. I sat one of my GF's down one night to watch space hunter with peter strauss, and the new Battlestar Galactica, the matrix, the sixth day and cherry 2000 and blade runner and I kept telling her that honestly if the technology was here to have the android/VR girlfriend versus her I couldn't lie to her - that I would rather have the android/robot/AI. She said to never lie to her so I didn't, but she slapped my face off and left me when I told the truth, I can never win.

The space pope said what I wanted was very bad ;( You will need quicktime to see his propoganda message.
