Can 3d vision replace tridef?

Hey guys,

I have a few questions about 3d vision. I'm wondering if it can replace a software I use called tridef. With tridef I can get a game to render in side by side mode. Can 3d vision do this with all games?

Secondly, tridef allows me to scale down the left and right image (but only for direct x 9 games), can 3d vision do this as well?

So essentially, im asking if i can render any game in sbs mode with the option of scaling down that left/right image all through 3d vision. If yes, then other than a 3d vision compatible monitor, do i need any other specialist equipment to achieve this?

The reason for wanting to do this, is so i can stream the game to my smartphone, which would be housed in a VR headset. Again, I can currently do this via tridef, but tridef has limited support and it cannot scale down a direct x 11 game.

Currently deciding which monitor to get, one has IPS but no 3d vision (Acer XB270HU), the other is a TN panel with 3d vision (Asus PG278Q ROG Swift). I suppose with a 3d monitor I'd also buy 3d glasses to utilise that feature more. But the picture quality of the IPS would be better. So I'm trying to weigh up if its worth getting the 3d monitor.

Thanks

No, Nvidia only supports a select number of their approved displays. This mainly means active monitors and some TVs via Nvidia 3DTV Play. They don't support SBS.

In terms of the monitor itself, I use the ROG Swift and it looks great. It's not an IPS, no, but for TN I think it's fine. The 3D is nice as well.

Thanks for the response. I'm wondering if a single overclocked msi gtx 970 would be enough to drive the 1440p res on the ROG Swift? I'm thinking to truly make use of that 144hz refresh rate my gpu needs to be able to push out around 120 fps. Not sure if my gpu will be able to do that unless I drop the game quality. Could even a single gtx 980 achieve 120 fps with everything set to ultra? If not, then I will consider a 1080p 144hz monitor.

Yes 1440P 144Hz does require power. However, with G-Sync you have more wiggle room than with a normal monitor. I do use SLI, but for Watch Dogs it doesn't support it so I'm using a single 980. Even with "just" one 980, I can run in 2D 1440P on Ultra settings and get around 90fps. Although G-Sync allows you to go maybe as low as 45fps and still be playable, I find 90fps+ to be the better experience. I have played other games (with SLI) and had a similar situation like FC: Blood Dragon on Ultra 2D with around 90fps.

Unfortunately G-Sync and 3D cannot be used together. So in 3D the refresh locks at 120Hz, meaning you must be getting around 120fps to not drop any frames. I've played a few games like this (Bioshock Infinite, DiRT3, DOA5, etc.) and it works. However I was utilizing the Tri-SLI and I'm not sure how 1 card would fare. DiRT3 was well optimized, and I was playing it on mostly High settings with triple monitor 3D Vision Surround. Bioshock Infinite was also in 3D/Triple-head, but with settings on all Low. DOA5 has issues with Surround, so I played in single monitor 3D.

I think that one 970 could run 1440p, but maybe not with every game on Ultra. Even a single 980 is not enough for some games. Though 1440p does look great, and in 2D G-Sync you can afford to have a lower fps and still be playable. 1080p will for sure have better performance, so maybe that's a good idea if you don't think you will upgrade your GPU in a while. I guess it depends what you want.

Welp I finally got my monitor on Saturday and spent a whole day messing around with it. My god, the 3D is amazing. I can't believe I've missed out on 3D for this long! VR can wait I say! At times I find the experience so immersive that I actually do believe it to be a VR experience, and I turn my head expecting my character in-game to do the same!!

Anyway, just wanted to say that I'm 110% happy with my choice. I hit 120-144fps no problem on games set to high. But 3D is on a next level. Don't think I can go back to 2D gaming!!

I've discovered helix mod, a site that houses fixes for 3D issues. My whole game collection just got a whole load of replayability  Now, I just need to find a fix for LIGHTPACK LEDS to work with fullscreen games and I'm sorted for the next 10 years!!

One question ROG SWIFT PG278Q has Side by Side mode?

No. You have to use the Nvidia 3D Vision driver. You can play SBS content, but with 3rd party apps like the Stereoscopic Player.
