Banning particular content (porn or otherwise) just seems like trying to push your ideology onto other people.
pushing is not the right word i guess, if we have the chance to prevent something bad happen, why dont we do it? :)
What is bad on sex / porn ?
I'm sure you are the result of this "bad" ...
everybody is doing it - it's like eating and breathing -
if you want to prevent really something bad - you will have to ban war/weapons/crime/pollution and destroying of the world ... first ...

best regards FR3D
nothing bad with sex, but if you sell sex act/porn to public, that is another topic.

If you don't like sex or porn, fine, but please don't go around trying to convice everyone that your view of the world is the only right path to go.
There's another organization that does this, Jehovas Witness, and they're generally not very well liked either.

The Rift is an open platform, unlike Google Glass and the Kinect. Anyone can make whatever they want, they don't need permission from us.

Enter this innocent phrase in the google searchbar: nude girls and then tell me that they try to filter. Kinect is a poor example since it's an integrated part of microsofts playing platform. Like a keyboard/mouse it's just a user input device. Microsoft can filter content on the xbox since it's a closed ecosystem. The oculus rift is a displaydevice, just like your monitor. It displays content from the net, games or whatever the user want to see and experience. How could oculus prohibit viewing such content?
Final line: There is no way that Oculus can do anything about it. Either for or against.

Edit: Took away some nonsense since the obvious fact that oculus rift is an open displaydevice somewhat eluded me... It's that thing with morningcoffee i guess.

All it would accomplish is to drive it underground. If you don't want porn on YOUR rift then don't buy or download it. If it were banned (and I fail to see how or why this would be done) it would still be able to be made available to those who want it. Pornography isn't illegal in most of the western world - although I'm sure there may be some exceptions - so why ban it in a new medium such as the rift?

We will not do anything like Google did. Google Glass is a locked down platform, you can only run applications on them if Google approves them (Unless you hack the device). Oculus is not going to lock things down and require our approval for developers to use our device.

and we should ask ourself why some countries banning porn.
i tell you sth about these countries. I walked down the street someday and there was an old islamic couple passing by. The funny thing is that the wife was old, massive and of course covered, but the husband was hiding her from me even though i am a 28 year young person and of course not interested in her. I just wanted to look at them, how its normal.
This day i truely noticed that those societies must have a very unnatural, disturbed sexual behaviour.
Not that i want to stir up hatred against them,on the contrary, but their religious leaders are really good in brain washing them.

OK before you start asking Oculus to do this, I hope you have passed a similar request onto all the forums of manufacturers in this list : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_li ... ufacturers

Whilst you are doing that, you better contact all the artist suppliers too - in case somebody paints something rude with their products.

In fact, artificial retinas are now becoming a reality; should blind people be forced to sign a waiver promising to only have marital relations through a hole in a sheet, lest they see naked sexy flesh ?

Aside from the above cheap shots - the most technically advanced and innovative computing systems I have ever worked with have been geared around adult content.

Personally i think quietboy is absolutely correct.
Oculus SHOULD be doing a lot more to monitor or ban ALL immoral content viewed on the rift.
But i think quietboy is a bit short sighted in just pornography.
Its well documented (you can search yourself, theres plenty of stuff on the net. (just ignore the stuff that dosent agree with me)) that violence in video games causes greater violence in life, and even competitive games cause increased aggression.

So i say All pornographic or violent content and any competitive encounters on the rift should be banned, and its up to Oculus to do more.

Dont worry, im about to email acer, asus, benq, sony, lg etc and let them all know that they should all be banning immoral content from being displayed on their monitors / tvs / phones. Its outrageous that these manufactures have got away with something they cant control for this long.

This is the silliest assertion I have read here for quite a while. It would be like saying Sony should ban porn on the televisions. Even if it were possible, as a evolved society we can have a common sense discussion about censorship and freedom without resorting to "ban everything"! Pretty much any entertainment medium can have negative effects. However I think there can be intelligent solutions to these rather than resorting to restrictions on freedoms. Need I really draw historical comparisons to what you are actually suggesting?

Ahem. "Reported".

Also, many would argue that Iceland is an "Elected Dictatorship" - hardly a typical 'western' country. Mind you Australia do some whacky things too, with green blood and stuff in video games.

You'd have to know the origins of it.

Puritans. they insist they left England to create 'a state of purity'. But no, they were kicked out of England under the threat of death. They were fanatics and the people of England and the Government/Crown of England wanted them gone. 'Leave or die' was the unspoken (and sometimes spoken) message to the Puritans, while they were still in England.

Once they started pouring out of England and began moving to the east coast of the USA, The crown of England and the rest really encouraged them to keep moving, and increased the pressure. They went to the new world.

They are the origin of America. Religious fanatics are the origins of America.

Thus, Sex is bad, kill all those who disagree with us. Guns are good, war is good, sex is bad.

Now, large numbers of Americans do not agree with this (they have moved away from or are not as influenced by it), but the undercurrent that was established in the beginning and handed down through the generations..this undercurrent is dissipating, But some remnants of it are still there. It has shaped some components of the American mindset up until this day. The genetic and sociological/cultural flow and motion of it still has an almost unrecognized influence on certain groups and areas of the USA.

So you end up with no real education, a low brow mentality, where religion takes the place of upbringing and education. War and guns and paranoia everywhere, the promotion of war, sex is bad -but with a closet full of pornography. Oh yes, patriotism, and screams about freedom, etc. All that unconscious hindbrain monkey-clan stuff, still running rampant. Easy to manipulate, as it is an unconscious and unknowing way of being.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President's_Commission_on_Obscenity_and_Pornography wrote:President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography
A 1969 United States Supreme Court decision that held that people could view whatever they wished in the privacy of their own homes caused the United States Congress to fund the President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography, set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson to study pornography.

The commission's report, called Report of the Commission on Obscenity and Pornography, and published in 1970, recommended sex education, funding of research into the effects of pornography and restriction of children's access to pornography, and recommended against any restrictions for adults. On balance the report found that obscenity and pornography were not important social problems, that there was no evidence that exposure to such material was harmful to individuals, and that current legal and policy initiatives were more likely to create problems than solve them. The report was widely criticized and rejected by Congress. The Senate rejected the commission's findings and recommendations by a 60–5 vote, with 34 abstentions. The senate rejected the following findings and recommendations in particular;
It seems that this scientific study reached a conclusion that was not popular with politicians. I actually obtained a copy of that report back when it was first published, and the main idea I got from it is that easily available pornography actually REDUCES sex crimes, by provided relief to frustrated potential criminals to may escalate their behavior onto other vulnerable individuals in the absence of pornography. This is essentially the same argument used for violent video games, in that games like GTA4 are said to prevent many incidents of road rage as a result from frustrating daily commute, and killing NPCs in a video game can provide relief when you have a terrible job and just want to "kill somebody". Killing NPCs harms nobody, and dissipates that urge to kill that some people can experience from their daily life experiences.

So although politically unpopular, and contrary to some public opinion, this and other studies have reach the conclusion that pornography is actually beneficial, and there is a higher incidence rate of sex crimes where pornography is tightly restricted.

@(un)quietboy: There are respected (but unpopular) scientifically supported counter-claims to your argument, in addition to constitutional and moral issues. You do not have the moral right (where I live) to tell others how to lead their lives, or what products or content they can produce or consume, despite the strong desire to proseletyze and enforce your moral opinions on others.
