This video predates CES 2013. Should it be in a different thread?Anthony Carboni: "It's Frickin' RAD Man!"

There goes the Spandex filter again. Keep meaning to talk to Neil about that...

Why is that? Is tested.com a banned site?

No, I think its supposed to filter out "bad" words but it gets all kinds of stuff.

Oh yeah, makes sense. The first part is just fine, but when you combine these,
-may-not-change-gaming-it-will-change
-how-we-design-games/
you'll get
-may-not-change-gaming-it-will-change-how-we-design-games/

Re: Oculus @ CES 2013
In another thread, we discovered that changing a couple of the "-" to "+" slipped through the Spandex filter, but still worked for that particular URL. Apparently that web server worked with either "+" or "-" characters in URLs (unexpectedly).Oneironaut wrote:Oh yeah, makes sense. The first part is just fine, but when you combine these,

GodOFSpandex/
Sadly, I tried doing that to this URL, but the webserver is not tolerant of that in this case...
It is quite interesting that the Spandex filter triggers if too many "-", but does not trigger if some of them are changed to "+", which indicates that it is probably not triggering on words in this case, but on characters. For example, here is your URL with that substitution:
http://www.tested.com/tech/452817-ces-2 ... ign-games/
If you hover over it (or click it) you will see that it does NOT have GodOFSpandex in it. It will trigger if you change which "-" characters are substituted, however... It seems to trigger on a run of hyphenated words, which can be interrupted by a "+" character.
Bad Spandex filter!

MSat wrote:I have similar concerns. With the sheer number of positive press reviews the Rift has been getting, what's to stop a huge company with plenty of internal resources (sony, samsung) from making a super-spec device benefiting from Oculus' grass-roots effort? I admire the efforts of Oculus to make a quality VR experience at an affordable price, and I think they deserve financial success for their hard work. I hope for their sake that they applied for some forward-looking patents to mitigate the risk of being crushed by some huge corporation. But on the other hand, it takes a big corporation to make a drool-worthy displaymahler wrote:I am worried about that. Currently Oculus is currently interested in "getting this right" without rushing things to the market. When quick buck alternatives pop-up they might introduce some nice features which will be patented and make it much harder for Oculus and others to keep the price low.rmcclelland wrote:The level of awareness of this device in the tech world took a huge step forward. I bet a lot of the major players are going to jump in after seeing their 4K TVs draw a fraction of the interest.
Basically, I'm afraid big companies will try to beat everybody to the market, but patenting obvious stuff in the process slowing down innovation.
big and slow, vs.. small and fast. I've had to work under similar situations. Keep the innovation and decision channel short and quick, and the big guys can be outrun and outmoved.

The nausea is not simply an artifact of hardware/human integration.Oneironaut wrote:Yeah, can't recall a single negative article. Not even neutral ones, tbh. The absolute WORST that come to mind are the ones along the lines of "not yet convinced that the Rift is the future of gaming", which in the face of the constant universal praise seem almost insulting in nature. This only goes to illustrate the absurdly high standard that the Rift is held up to.
In addition, there have been numerous claims of nausea, but even then it was usually acknowledged that the kinks are likely to get ironed out on subsequent versions. And is it just me or have there been less such reports at CES than previously? May have something to do with the new 1000 Hz sensor?
It is a product of a near complete mental displacement of the reference frame.. due to all factors of an artificial reality being that of subtle difference, which, together.. hand truth and lie to the mind, all at the same time.
There are ways to tame this. I have some potential solutions in hand......

That was a really good article - I'm really impressed with the stuff tested.com have put out for the Rift!Oneironaut wrote:One more great article from CES that had slipped by me:

For some reason it won't let me post the whole link (try it for yourself, lol), so stitch the above URL fragments together.
Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.

I hadn't realized it before but a similar picture to mine in that article made my realize that the demo Oculus Rift uses the same foam liner I ended up using for my DIY Rift.TheHolyChicken wrote: That was a really good article - I'm really impressed with the stuff tested.com have put out for the Rift!

Tested.com's Norm talked to Will and Adam about the CES demo during the latest tested podcast. Nothing new, but Will and Norm hyping Rift for Adam Savage is always fun.

Here is that URL with the "Spandex filter fix" applied (as described in a dedicated thread):Oneironaut wrote:Oh yeah, makes sense. The first part is just fine, but when you combine these,

-how-we-design-games/
you'll get
GodOFSpandex/
http://www.tested.com/tech/452817-ces-2 ... ign-games/
Just hover over it or click it to see that it works.
EDIT: There is no need to replace all the hyphens. I just replaced one in the middle of that run of hyphenated words, giving a run of seven hyphens on each side. But replacing all of them (as was done in the recent edit to the original post) works too...

This popped up for me, hadn't seen it before, an interview with Palmer Luckey (who?) by GamerHub.TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 7_in9eaWoI
Interesting detail, Palmer mentioned they have sold preorders for $500k so far, not sure if that has been said before

Here is a CES 2013 demo I haven't seen before, with Darren Kitchen of Hak5:

I did not find this in the mtbs3d search engine, so I thought it would be good to post it here.
Darren was impressed and wants to take it home.
