RTCW:ET and other opensource shooters integrating Rift

Hi,

Just wondering if there are any fans of RTCW:ET out there. I know RTCW hasn't been lately what it used to be, but there is still a strong core community. I always liked the gameplay a lot, though I'm not really an experienced player, average at best.

I would like to see Rift support in there, maybe some other developers would like to help out, share the burden?

Also, maybe some other shooters which you think should get some recognition for possible Rift integration? Quake 3 is opensource, for one.

I personally have experience with C++, C and OpenGL, albeit basic, with some knowledge of (mostly postprocessing) shaders. I haven't worked with the RTCW engine before, so that'll be my starting point for the coming months.

Also, how do you see Rift players competing against 2D players with mouse/kb config?

Don't think I have to time to contribute to this, but I think its a great idea. There are a number of open-source titles that could be retro-fitted to work with the Rift. It would also allow us to do more fun stuff with head-tracking, independent gun aiming and stuff like that. There is also the Source SDK, which seems like it could work for the same reasons. Also, the Cube 2 engine: http://sauerbraten.org/

I'm planning on using an existing open source fps engine as the base for Rift software dev, I'm not sure which game/engine yet, and I haven't done much research.

I did have a quick look at this one: http://www.xonotic.org/

I'd be interested to hear opinions on existing games/engines to use.

Thanks, Adam.

The Cube2 engine mentioned above has a feature that might be fascinating to use with the Rift:

"allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game"

- hmm some kind of VR 3D minecraft experience..?

I wonder how 2D games can be fitted for the Rift well. Need to have a devkit for that I guess. There are a lot of good 2D games, for instance OpenRA, which I think is based on OpenGL.

ADD: I could see a platformer going on, that'd be sweet

Does anyone know of a good open source Voxel engine?

There's always the dismally ugly VOXlap engine. Granted its fun to play with and i've spent a few hours tinkering with it, but the voxels are so large, and not in the way i'd like them to be.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but I have heard it mentioned else-where:
