I've never seen one, but that project has been discussed here before. I think someone said it would be difficult/expensive to get the proper hyperbolic/ellipsoldal mirrors to use with this. But if you could find the parts it may be an worthwhile DIY project.

Well I'd certainly recommend digging around here in the VR/AR section and also the DIY sub-forum. There are a lot of designs and discussions of DIY HMDs.

This actually sounds much more achievable than getting a high FOV with conventional optics.

I noticed this:

We applied LCD module (0.5 inch, 1024×768 pixels), which was
disassembled from a commercial HMD (Glasstron: Sony).

I wasn't aware that the Glasstron had a 1024x768 res display...? Something tells me this isn't correct, unless the wikipedia article about Glasstron is incorrect?

The Wikipedia entry says the maximum resolution was 800×600 on the top-of-the-line Glasstron PLM-S700E and it's confirmed by the Mindflux website. Are you sure the extracted LCD panels were really 1024x768 ?

It has HUGE possibilities, DIY tested my own.
It can go OVER the 180 degrees (approx 220 deg!) if there would be a solution against vignette, this HMD's FOV will beat all HMD's over the world.

Also the eye relief is upto 5 times larger than the LEEP related optics and has no image diformation at the edges.
The image is so sharp because mirrors have no chromatic aberrations.

So yes, it will be a huge achievement.

long time lurker here, curious about the specifics surrounding the vignette issue if you wouldn't mind elaborating. I have experience building larger collimated displays and this looks extremely interesting to me knowing the potential!

Mirrors are almost finished.
