Can a Simple Film Overlay Magically Transform a 2D Screen into a 3D One?

Adrian Covert — Take a sheet of Pic3D film, apply it to any LCD and it promises that it will properly display 3D video (displayed in the side-by-side format) without special glasses, thanks to lenticular lens technology.

How well this actually works remains to be seen by the masses, but the Pic3D film will begin shipping in August in 12.1, 15.6, 21.5 and 23-inch sizes. There will also be an iPhone-sized sheet. Prices will range between $25 and $186. [CrunchGear]

It'll only work if this company can provide specific sheets for the different displays that exist, because the focal centre of each semi-cylinder of the lenticular sheet needs to be on the exact plane of the LCD matrix. Spatial View is doing the same but by engaging with laptop manufacturers for the 2011 product lines which seem to be quite a sensible approach. We'll see if it does work in the end. I have one for the iPhone (3GS) and it does indeed work but there are still some caveats, mostly related to the lack of content, the difficulties to properly align the sheet and the limited viewing angles.

This sounds interesting, but $186 for a sheet?!?!?! You can practically get an entire 3D screen for that price (I think those 22" Viewsonics can be had for around $200).
