After consulting with sharky I made my first every proof of concept stereoscopic test movie.
it can be downloaded here:
http://yuriythebest.g0dsoft.com/Test54.avi
(5.67mb)
the quality is bad to put it mildly and you will have to reverse the channels to watch it. Can be watched easily in 'StereoMovie Player' . There is definite 3d- but to make the 3d more apparent I held out my hand in front of the camera.
and how did I make this? using a generic digital photo camera
http://i-m.com.ua/pic/u/ufo.ds1060.jpg
and a homemade mirror rig using a small mirror, a cd case and lots of scotch tape
http://www.mtbs3d.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-864
Note: the second thingy glued to the cd case is not a mirror but a cd case fragment that helps to easily position the camera and has nothing to do with optics
conclusion: get 2 webcams...
my first stereomovie!

To anyone interested: Don't even waste your time attempting to do it this way - for true 3d movies get 2 * MiniDV cams and a synchronization device. Still though for the hobbyist this is a bit of fun at least.

as I mentioned in my conclusion- get 2 webcams. Getting two miniDv cams might be a little expensive. And for making youtube stereovideos 2 webcams is quite enough. though if you want to shoot normal/high quality stereovideos then yes, miniDv is the way to go.chrisjarram wrote: To anyone interested: Don't even waste your time attempting to do it this way - for true 3d movies get 2 * MiniDV cams and a synchronization device. My experienced worst problem making stereovideos (two cameras or two vcr's) is syncing. The eyes are incredible sensitive for difference in the pictures when the cause is syncronization. For example you can check the vids i made with vga-tv-converters and vcr's. The effect is really ok if the scenery stands somewhat static but if the scenery alters a lot (like in racing games) you may get a very disturbing effect. No matter what: The way Yuri makes it fix the syncronisation problem though. Might feel like a little clumsy rig but at least it works and the effect isn't too bad.

Check this out-

Gave me a wierd idea of making a large stereoscope fixed to a 22inch lcd. Then just need a driver to split the screen into left and right..

I'm all for the driver, which splitts the screen in halfes - in S-3D.
If you could choose to mirror one of the sides, it would be very nice for THIS kind of 3D on one monitor.
I had the Idea to make a big HMD, of a single screen.
The advantage is, that you have the fixed head-position, but can move your head. But you need the drivers And I don't think it's realy worth for anyone.
Maybe IZ3D could be convinced to make a single screen planar mode
It would also work, in horizontal streched mode
