I don't know much about making lenses, but I support your effort.

Re: [Que]making best lens
I know this thread is dead, but I didn't want to start a new thread on this topic, and it is fairly close to applying to this topic. It is a source for used or surplus lenses, and they have indexed everthing. The prices are not junk-yard level, but the lenses are well cared for and not just thrown in a bin unprotected.
Thursday evening, I mentioned the Surplus Shed store. They mostly do mail order, but do have Saturday hours for in-person visits. They are particularly well known for surplus optics. They have a search tool for optics and also for mechanical gears.

I have a lot of experiments about it.
I spend two years making lenses in all shapes for a wide fov hmd.
first of all, it is very important to have a drill press or adapter.
without this tool you cannot polish that fast and precisely.
Second: your mandrel has to be smooth enough to avoid too much grinding and polishing work.
The easiest lens to make are the planar-convex and a planar-concave ones.
If you want to have double-concave or -convex, you can use glass adhesive to glue both planar sizes together.
Do not hesitate to ask what you want to know about diy lenses.
