Meh... last one was a mess, story-wise. Anyway, 3D and Zoe Saldana are reasons enough to watch it at least once...

It mostly bothered me that everything were just plot devices to bring one group of characters to discuss this, another group of characters to discuss that, and so on. No effort by anybody actually mattered, anything could happen next. For example: black holes destroy things (planets). No, they actually cause time travel. No, they actually cause neither, just slowly crush ships. Red matter must be planted into planet's crust (or core? don't recall) to work. Except in all other cases where it works anyway wherever it is. Time travel conveniently brings various characters together to discuss stuff, but never to actually do anything useful...
Maybe I'm over-analyzing it.
I liked how Enterprise (as in, last series of four seasons) had stories that were better written, they were not some seemingly random sequences of events but it mattered what characters did. Or at least that's how I recall it...

Yes! Those were exactly my issues as well. I can accept that Red Matter does whatever you say it does... but then use it consistently. I'm convinced that Vulcan wasn't destroyed, just sent back into the past. And it's safely oribiting besides Vulcan I.
Also this one: The Enterprise can't escape the gravitation pull of the black hole that Kirk wisely created by SHOOTING ALL OF THE RED MATTER (a drop of which has been observed to completely destroy a planet) at the Romulans. Scotty guns the engine to 11, (Warp 11) and it's still not fast enough to escape the pull. But then! They decide to eject the warp core, which causes an explosion (Warp .01) which is enough to push the Enterprise off of event horizon and into the safety of... the middle of nowhere. With no warp core.
Option 1: They are close enough to inhabited space that they can get somewhere on sub-light engines and then hitch a ride or get a new warp core to make it home. DOWNSIDE: That new black hole they created is probably going to cause some problems.
Option 2: The new black hole is truly in the middle of nowhere and doesn't threaten any nearby inhabited systems. And then the Star Ship Enterprise begins it's 1.3 Million mission: Going home (boldy) on sublight engines. DOWNSIDE: There are no chances to ignore the Prime Directive since they don't run into anything. Ever.
