best output for 1080 games checkerboard or side by side

Post by gixer »

thinking about upgrading my 3d tv so i can play games in 1080,my current tv will only do 1360x768 in checkerboard.i know that the latest 3d spec only refreshes at 24 hz and causes blurring on games but if the tv can output checkerboard or side by side this increases to 60hz,so which will give the best picture quality

The best quality will be a 1080P 120Hz LCD monitor, for example, used with Nvidia 3D Vision glasses. They come as big as 27", anything bigger you will need an HDTV. Unfortunately 3D HDTVs are limited by HDMI to 720P for gaming. Checkerboard or side-by-side are not full quality, though they should probably look better than 720P. If you want to wait another year or so, then there will be HDMI 1.4a displays that accept 1080P 60Hz signals. Until then 720P is about as good as it gets. Granted, some TVs (mostly older) will allow use of checkerboard, and some users find that the quality looks better than HDMI 720P. I can't confirm this myself. However I would not buy one of these "legacy" "3D-Ready" TVs today. I would get something that worked with the new standard (HDMI 1.4a), as that ensures the best compatibility with current and future products (PCs, PS3, Blu-Ray, etc.).

Checkerboard is definitely better than side by side.
Checkerboard 1080p has more pixels than full resolution 720p and integer scaling (1080p/2)is easier to do and better applied than fractional scaling (720p->1080p) by almost every display.
It's the best these current TVs can provide, but be careful not all 3DTVs have it. Make absolutely sure the TV has it by checking the downloadable manual on the manufacturer website. Also some TVs are known to have bugs with some outputs and cause unexplainable ghosting where they don't with other modes.

yes i did that and downloaded the manuals to find out which did checkerboard in my price range.anyway when i went to curry,s the 3d tv i wanted was end of line.so ended up getting what i think was a bargain a samsung ps51d550c complete with 3 pairs of glasses and a 3d blu-ray player for £945.but was told that most manufacturers are not doing 1080 checkerboard but are sticking with frame packing side by side and top/bottom.but so far the tv plays great in 3d no ghosting on 3d blu-rays and just a little playing games in side by side

Sounds like an awesome deal. That should be a pretty nice TV.
