No one's bought a notebook yet?

Post by subwoofa »

I'm in the market for a 3D notebook and I thought I'd check back here for some advice, but this forum is empty :? So I'll post the first topic.

Here's a few things I've found so far but I'll add more as I narrow down the search:

The thing is, most 3D laptops are not really capable enough to do serious gaming. In fact, some even have integrated GPUs! They seem more aimed at 3D photos and videos, maybe 3D Blu-Rays.

If a gamer is going to drop serious cash into a rig, they want the best out of it. A non future-proofed, expensive laptop with a non-immersive 3D experience is just not very interesting to most.

I haven't really followed up on much of the recent string of 3D laptops. They do sound cool though. But like PalmerTech said, many of them are underpowered for running modern games in stereo 3D and the ones that are decent are expensive. I guess if you are already on the market for a laptop, no reason not to spend the extra money to get a 3D one. Also, if you are looking at the Nvidia 3D Vision laptops, make sure to get one of the newer models with the built in emitter. Some of the older models require the use of the USB emitter and that thing can be annoying if you are trying to be portable.

Thanks for your input. I have to get a laptop for work, I figured I might as well get one that can do S3D, but I didn't want to spend my money on something that wasn't going to work or look good at all. I figure a laptop is more flexible, too, since I'm not sure where I can set up a desktop PC at the moment (very limited space at home). Eventually I guess I can add a monitor or get a projector.

So far I like the Asus G53Jw:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M, with 1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM should be good enough for gaming I think. The emitter is built in as you recommended.

Yeah, that ASUS one looks nice if you can afford it.
