Samsung PN42B450 and PS3

Post by forgot2panic »

I've been digging around looking to see just if (and how) I could get my samsung plasma pn42b450 to output 3d via my ps3. Really haven't been able to find a definitive answer yet. I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but I've been able to figure out that I'll need an emitter and glasses. I don't mind spending the $150 if I know it's going to work.

One of the other guys on this forum seemed to be having problems with the 50-inch model's resolution.

Does anyone have one of these 42-inch plasma's from 2008 (which I believe is 1024 x 768) up and running in 3d on a ps3?

The problem you are going to have has less to do with the resolution, and more to do with the HDMI connector.

PS3 only supports HDMI 1.4 connections and does not include alternate options. The exception are third party games and game developers that implement additional support beyond the HDMI 1.4 spec.

Games you can try include Avatar: The Game and Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao. I would expect that Crytek's Crysis 2 should work for you as well - it's a real possibility. However, any games that are bound to HDMI 1.4 won't work on your system.

That's what I'm afraid of. Spending the money and finding out its incompatible. I wish Sony would make a list of compatible TVs. It's harder than it needs to be to get an info on this.

Anyone else who wanted to know the answer to this question, I finally got what seems like a definitive response from someone on the CNET Samsung forum.
forgot2panic,

At this time, there's not an emitter that will work with previous years' televisions. While 3D wouldn't necessarily be ruled out, the current active shutter version of 3D is not possible on the 2008/2009 or earlier panels.

I'm not aware of a separate transmitter available for any Samsung models at this time, including the 2008 lineup.

I realize that's probably not the answer you wanted, but I hope you can appreciate the straightforward answer.

Looks like I'm well behind the technology curve again. :/

the emitter i have is a universal one which plugs into the vesa socket in the back.the smsung will except a checkerboard input.it works with a pc connected but the problem with the ps3 is it does not output checkerboard on its 3d bluerays or its 3d games except avatar which does.the problem is the samsung's 3d menu being greyed out unless it it connected to a pc and in the correct resolution.hopefully sony will release a patch to make it compatible

I guess that's the only hope, now, is some sort of firmware update.

It won't work. The only way you can get any 3D working on that TV is either with a Xbox 360 game system (the 360 will output at your displays native resolution), or a PC. The resolution is the problem, as well as the kind of 3D that your TV uses. You can still watch 3D Blu Ray movies on that, but you'll have to do it via a PC, and you'll need special software and hardware to make it all work. Too much drama if you ask me. If you really want 3D, then sell that display and either get a C490 or C680 Samsung. If you have the cash, get the C680 instead for the true 1080p.

Thanks for the advice. Seems like I just got this one. Oh well, I knew it was a long shot.

Yeah, one of the Panasonic 3D Blu Ray players will output in Checkerboard, but the problem again is going to be the resolution. The 42 inch requires 1024 x 768 resolution for the 3D to work. The Panasonic would need to convert the 1920 x 1080 to 1024 x 768 checkerboard, and it won't do it. The only way you can do it is with a PC that has a Blu Ray drive, and the newest PowerDVD 10 software that supports 3D Blu Ray. You'd also have to set your video card to output at the 1024 x 768 resolution. If you had the 50 incher, it would be 1360 x 768 resolution.

The big limitation with these legacy 3D plasmas from Samsung, is that they require a very specific resolution to work, and they won't work in any other resolution. That's the most difficult thing.
