Get new S3D Solution or Keep Older S3D Solution ??

Post by The_Nephilim »

I am having a Dilema, I am wondering If I should keep my Current Rig and get another projector for a TH2Go setup that is in my Sig?? or upgrade and get the new nVidia 3D Vision glasses..

The new Upgrade will be a major upgrade almost all but the Mobo and sound Card..which will cost around $1600 and be Only a Single Projector..

If I keep what I currently have now and get a TH2Go setup which will cost around $1000..Now I am not to worried about cost as either way is gonna cost, my Problem is will the new System with Win7 64bit Play the older games and in S3D??

I currently play a few older Flight Sims ie TAW2.0, JF/A-18, EECH.

Now I just got Flaming Cliffs 2 and I would like to get a new PC just because of that..I also have ArmA2 which runs OK but IF I go with a Beefier CPU and Vid Card and a ton of Memory would run SO much Smoother..but will it play the older games that range from DX5 through DX9..

Hmm. Tough call. I didn't vote but maybe I can help you decide.

First off, the new Nvidia driver loses a lot of support for older titles. I believe only DirectX8 and later is supported. Earlier DirectX versions and OpenGL are no longer supported. If all you play is really old games then you are probably better off sticking with an old rig.

A question though: Does TH2G work in 3D? That could be an interesting experience. Would be taxing on a rig thats already maxed out though.

There could be a third option: save the money?

Yes the TH2Go will work in 3D ;)

Well if I will loose support for the older Games I guess it looks like I will be sticking with the older setup.. I was thinking on getting another Processor and just disable one of the cores I think I might get a bit more mileage out of this olde school setup??

I could save the money but what good is saving it.. hehe

I am thinking of getting the E8400 3.00GHZ Core2Duo CPU. will this be faster if I disable the one core then running my current PIV 3.80GHZ Hyperthread CPU??

Well I'm pretty sure old support has been dropped, but I can run some tests if you want. So far I tried the original Unreal Tournament (dx7) and while the Nvidia popup rating did appear, the game did not look 3D. Unfortunately I don't have many other older games but if there are demos for those games you play I can give them a shot.

Also, I've got the E8400. Running at 3.0Ghz now but I had it up to 3.6Hz without much problem. I imagine its faster than a P4 but with one core disabled I don't know. But I think you would need a new mobo to get a new CPU, no? I don't think the sockets are compatible.

I was able to test Half-Life 1 (Dx7) and a random DirectX 5 game and neither work with the new Nvidia driver. I also found a thread on the Nvidia forums stating that DirectX6 games (like Thief and System Shock 2) do not work either. So my original advice still stands. Nvidia 3D Vision only supports DirectX8 or higher. Sorry.

OK Thanks for doing that test. just would of likes better results ;)

But the good thing I will save a bunch of money.. I am going to upgrade my CPU and Memory..

I am going to get a E8400 C2Duo CPU 1333FSB @ 3.00GHZ. but I will need to disable one core but it should still be faster then my PIV 570J.. I also plan on OC the E8400 to 4GHZ ;)

Be careful overclocking to 4Ghz. I was messing around with OCing when I first got my E8400. Got it up to 4Ghz at one point but it was very unstable and wouldn't even last long enough to play a game. I settled on 3.6Ghz but then I burnt my RAM out (probably due to the overclocking). Now I just leave it at stock 3.0Ghz I don't think its really worth it for an extra 3fps or whatever it was I was getting in Crysis.

Here are the Steps to get running in D3D9 mode under Glide but you will need to be running in glide mode. If not Set in Glide mode

Step 1: Start the TAW Launcher like so:

Step 2: Click Graphics and Application Settings you will see the Following Screen:

Step 3: Click Configure glide wrapper:

in that Screen goto Renderer it should be by defaul in DirectDraw 7 & DirectX 7 change that to D3D9 then test the Glasses..If you are unsure How to set in Glide mode Ill make a quick Guide for you to do so.. just let me know..

Ok, I was able to test in Glide mode with the Dx9 renderer. It still doesn't work at all. Aside from there being no 3D the Nvidia driver tints the screen brown to let you know its not supported. I don't think there is much hope for these oldies to ever be supported again. Sorry.
