I'm currently running 3D movies and can run stereo games on my PC using the Geforce 5500 FX graphics card, Win XP and a 17" CRT monitor. I can view as anaglyph using the nVidia settings and interlaced using the e-dimensional PC dongle. So I have stereo compatibility on my PC but I'm wondering about the Zalman 3D monitor. Does it only work with Vista and higher graphics cards or could I get it to work on my system as it is, seeing as I am already getting 3D success? I want a bigger and newer 3D compatible LCD monitor.

Thanks

Gae

You can check your nvidiapanel if the horisontal interlace is available as stereoformat. It should work then with the rig you have now.

Yeah, the Zalman works fine on XP as long as you have an Nvidia series 7 card or below using the old stereo driver. It also works with the IZ3D driver so you have a lot of options. You probably won't be running many newer games with a 5500 FX card, but you'll be able to play with your existing games fine. You can get the Zalman for cheap, $300, at this place (I ordered mine from them, they are legit):

Hmmm, amongst various options in the nvidia panel there is "vertical interlaced" but not "horizontal interlaced". I am running forceware version 162.50.

I'm tempted to buy this monitor more and more..they have come down in price here in the UK, around £240 ($390) with hardly any delivery costs compared to from the US.

You need the "horizontal interlaced" as an option. I know that this worked on the 91.31 stereo driver, which was what I used with the Zalman on XP. Otherwise you can buy the IZ3D driver, that will also work on XP.

I am looking at get the Zalman too but seeing how user reviews are kinda hard to come by I have a few questions.
Can I run duel monitors with the Zalman?
Also what is the 3D picture Quality. I turned on the IZ3D driver Interlaced mode with my not-3d monitor and doesn't look good, all liney and stuff. Is the picture clean when a true interlaced monitor is attached? And can you see the lines of Polarization in 2D mode?
I have been using IZ3D Anaglyph for years, shutters give me migraines. I cant see a passive glasses system causes that kinda pain, but Ill ask anyways. Any Eyestrain or the like?
Finally, what is the angle at which you can no longer see the 3D effect? Do you have to be sitting right in fount of it or can outer people standing on ether side enjoy the 3D magic?
Thanks

I've had the Zalman Trimon for about a year, so let me see if I can address your questions.

- Yes, you can run dual monitors with the Zalman. I had my Zalman as my primary monitor and another 22" 2D monitor on the side. This works fine in Windows and when I play games its just on the Zalman. If you are talking about running dual Zalmans in 3D mode, that may be possible, but don't quote me on that.

- The 3D picture quality is top-notch and you will not find a much better solution for this price. The colors are crisp, the image is sharp, and the ghosting is at a bare minimum compared to other solutions. Obviously it won't match a professional RealD system (like in the theaters) but at home it doesn't get much better than this. The only downside is that small text is nearly impossible to read in 3D mode, so if you play a lot of RPGs that might be a problem. Other than that the quality is great. You are not going to get a feel for this by running the driver on a 2D monitor. Thats like watching a Blu-Ray movie on a black & white TV. Obviously that doesn't work. When you wear the glasses with the real monitor you get a nice 3D image, one eye sees the odd fields and one eye sees the even fields. In 2D mode it looks just like a normal monitor.

- There is almost no eyestrain with the passive polarized glasses. This is one major advantage that it has over active solutions like the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses. It is very similar to the experience of the theater in that respect (in fact, the standard RealD glasses will work with the monitor). However I never experienced any headaches with any 3D solution be it anaglyph, shutters, passive or even an HMD. However the HMD with headtracking sometimes makes me feel sick in my stomach but thats a different story.

- In order for the 3D to work right you need to be sitting in the "sweet-spot". Once you figure out where this is, its pretty easy to adjust the monitor to match. For the best results you want to keep your head still. Horizontal motion is not so bad (you have maybe 30-45 degrees of room) but vertical motion is very bad. I don't know what the angle is but its probably like 10 degrees. So you basically have to be sitting in a seat right in front of the monitor. I guess maybe 2 people could view it at once, but they would both need to be sitting next to each other. You can't really have people standing behind you if that is what you are asking. And viewing 3D movies from say a bed is probably a no-go as well. Even so, it has a wider viewing angle than some other solutions, like the iz3D monitor.

Overall I'd say the Zalman is a great choice, especially when it can be had for around $300 these days. I paid over $700 when it first came out and I don't regret it one bit. Even as a 2D monitor it works very well, looks sexy, and has some nice adjustment options (like rotating into portrait mode). In 3D mode it looks great and you have the option of running both the Nvidia drivers and the iz3D drivers. Really, you can't go wrong.

1. Yes, You can! (Zalman using only 1 DVI cable, don't know how it is with 3D driver and dual monitor...) You won't recognise anithing of the polarisation without glasses on.

2. You will loose the half vertical resulution in 3D Mode, for me this isn't that bad... You only recognise it when you have small objects in distance (far away trees, etc). But you have ecellent ghosting. When you are in the Sweet spot the gohsing can only recognised in high contrast situations (Light at the end of a tunnel or Flashlight in absolute dark, as example)

3. You can get eyestrain, but the you have overdone it with seperation and Convegence. Passive interlanced as itselve doesen't strain eyes.

4. Horizontal you have a realy wide viewing angel, only vertically it is limited to a vew degrees. I've tyed it with a friend in Virtual Streetfighter IV it's realy great to play together in 3D.

it's OK guys....I ended up buying a second Hand Infocus X1 DLP projector in the end as I knew that I'd want the big screen image.....very pleased with it too....the 3D is excellent at 85 Hz.

I Just Got My Zalman today!
I Love IT!!!!! I wasn't sure if I would like the High Gloss screen, but It is a perty cool feather. It seems to give It higher contrast, and there isn't any real glare.
One of the things I heard about it is that you cant read small print in 3D mode. But I can just Fine, its when you are wearing the glasses with out 3D mode on is when you cant read anything.

The 3D is Amazing!!! True it cuts the Horizontal res in half, but you don't miss it. I used the red/ blue glasses before this and they are CRAP! This is true 3D, no darkness, no ghosting what so ever , No eye strain. Just incredibility awesome 3D experience. My Bother, who makes fun of 3D all the time, sat down and played Zombie Master for hours in 3D.

The "Real D)) 3D" glasses you get in the Movies work great with it! I prefer them over the ones they give you (fit better over glasses.)
Its real easy to view the 3D, as long you are somewhat level with it and with in 120 degrees in fount of it you will see it. Pretty much if you are siting in a chair you will get the effect.

I am not a vista user so I did not install the drivers, instead I'm using the iZ3D driver and it works great.

Best of all it is a really good 2D monitor. The thing is huge and beautiful! Its plane black, nothing gouty or flashy. No big speakers bar that you wont use anyway, it has speakers, but there well hidden. I know some will disagrees with me but it has no stupid Supper bright blue LEDs, Thank you Zalman! Its a very professional looking monitor with out reminding you of work in the least.
The picture is awesome. Great contrast and Res.

Over all, for the Price of $260 and considering I was getting a new monitor anyway this is a great buy. An Awesome 2D monitor with a Sick 3D mode!

P.S. I got it form PROVANTAGE, they say its a special order, but they shipped it the same day i ordered it.

one more thing, Does any one know where to find 3D movies? like the Pixar movies and such. I have a player (http://www.3dtv.at) that can play 3D movies if they are the Side by Side format. and can find a bunch of shorts but no feature length movies. thanks again.

There are a couple of films you can get in interlaced format or HQFS (high-quality field-sequential):
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=s ... FS&x=0&y=0

You can also try here (but the quality may not be so great on all those films):

I think we should have a 3d movie section here, and you do some reviews cyber. It is just too confusing to keep up with all these places to get your s3d fix, amazong, 3underground, etc etc, make this place the primiere portal for it all. Your one stop s3d shop.

I know they are a bit pricy but the Sensio Edition 3D movies are superb quality...I have Spy Kids and Taza, Son of Cochise.....you can get the Spy Kids Extreme Edition cheaper at Amazon but make sure you get the right one as there are different versions. The Sensio distibutors link though for it is.

http://www.cwonline.com/store/view_product.asp?Product=1259

What you get with the Sensio Editions is a film with a perfect left and right image that plays in Stereoscopic Player via page/flip or interlaced...true 3D balance, full colour and no eyestrain. I'm sure the other Sensio Editions are of the same quality..otherwise pick up Haunted Castle, Encounters in the 3rd dimension or "The Creeps" (naff film but great 3D). Underground movie has some nice anaglyph conversions too but I wouldn't get anything with a score rate under 8/10.
