You could turn your holiday snaps or favourite figurines into three-dimensional images with new free software developed by a researcher from Queensland University of Technology and the Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID), based at QUT.

a much faster way though is using a cool free program called crazybump

I don't know how it does it but it's awesome! results are way better than just converting the regular bitmap to grayscale
However, for custom detailed textures I still recommend either doing it by hand or of course Zbrush/mudbox
