Wow, thats some rig right there. I'm still waiting for a decent stereo camera to hit the market but I guess in the meantime the DIY route is the only path to take. Thats a pretty cumbersome device, though. Might be good for experimenting in the home, but I can't really see taking that outside in any practical manner.

Mecano! Awesome!
I once tried with a beamsplitter myself but the image portion missed was way greater than this. I even had the mirrors almost touching the lensehouse without success.
It might depend on the camera used.
Great find though and a good way to decent 3d.

Re: 1 camera beamsplitter stereo device
wow this is very advanced!I once tried something similar that involved a cd case, a camera, a small mirror and a lot of scotch tape... didn't go too well
now he should make it rusty and add superfluous knobs and stuff for the perfect steampunk stereocamera that will bemuse future generations

Re: 1 camera beamsplitter stereo device
I have some front surface mirrors so I tried it:
http://www.mtbs3d.com/gallery/albums/us ... a_test.wmv" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A rock solid setup and a HD camera with stereo sound (camera is pointing down!!!) would produce very good 3D videos.
Easy to work with all the way through.
Edit: I think this is the original: http://www.ledametrix.com/prism/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

cool! I could barely see any 3d with the joystick video cause of all the reflections n stuff but the plant video was actually quite nice 3d. make more stuff and upload!!

Re: 1 camera beamsplitter stereo device
You could use 90 degrees prisms instead of mirrors, if you can figure out how to hold them and place them. It might be a bit expensive but I think it produces very little distortion. Something like this (those are for laser I think so I'm not entirely sure they pass all visible light) : TECHSPEC® Right Angle Prisms
You could buy bed glasses that are used to watch tv while lying in bed and take them apart to take the prisms. Not sure it would work. The angle of reflection is around 45 degrees.
Here's one model : Bed Spectacles
