LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
The recent success of "Monsters vs. Aliens," which set a record for 3-D ticket sales, signaled a 3-D comeback.
In the animated "Battle for Terra," opening Friday in both 2-D and 3-D versions, humans invade the title planet.
But there's one 1950s relic making a definite comeback these days: 3-D movies.
And it's not just for monster movies anymore, despite the fact that the March release of the animated "Monsters vs. Aliens" kicked off a 3-D movie boom that shows no signs of abating.
From now through the end of 2009, 10 movies, animated and live-action, are scheduled to hit theaters in 3-D form.
Two of them already are proven favorites: 3-D reconfigurations of the animated Pixar hits "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2."
The others range from new animated features (led by Friday's sci-fi "Battle for Terra" and Disney/Pixar's "Up") to the return of "Titanic" director James Cameron with the sci-fi adventure "Avatar."
In addition to 3-D versions, "Avatar, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and other high-profile releases also will turn up in Imax 3-D, delivering even more cinematic immersion -- at an even bigger ticket price.

Re: CALL IT A COMEBACK: 3-D gives filmmakers storytelling tool
It would be great if 3D would stick around and become the norm instead of just a recurring fad, unfortunately history has shown that 3D has come into the mainstream whenever the movies and TV are struggling to capture the viewers attention.
When the theatres were struggling against the newly invented TV(1946) in the 1950s they brought in 3D, then someone invented widescreen (Cinemascope) and viewers didn't need glasses to view it, so down went 3D.
These days we have HDTV and what happens at the movies? 3D comes back!
With the great computer graphic technologies we have today 3D could very well stay around and become the norm, but JVC has built a 35MP projector that may once again kill 3D in the movies.
