3D television without the need for glasses.

Post by maxthreat »

I don't believe this has been posted here. I did a few searches and came up empty so here it is.

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories has a prototype for a 3D television with no need for glasses.
3D TV: A scalable system for real-time acquisition, transmission and autostereoscopic display of dynamic scenes.
I've seen different approaches and this one is very interesting.

Why is this more interesting then other lenticular multi view approaches? The basic approach is the same:
lots of pixels > lots of views > nice tracking-less freedom of movement.
This demonstrator, however nicely built, is not feasible as a product. There are many lenticulars that are, and that are available even.

Cool, but who's gonna be able to afford 16 projectors?

Sorry everyone already saw it. I would imagine if anything did come of this you wouldn't have 16 separate projectors but a single retail box of projectors. Maybe 16 or more with some special lens or multiple lenses and the screen. I could also imagine this type of technologies being adopted into some kind of rear projection 3DTV similar to the old RGB rear projection TVs.

First: never worry about news being posted twice. Twice is still better than never. It seems similar to Holographika's approach. http://www.holografika.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
