Sky secretly filming & broadcasting live events in 3D in UK!

Post by koshien »

Hi!
In 2009-2010 Sky UK will start its 3D offer in the United Kingdom!
In these last months Sky has secretly filmed live events in 3D such as the boxing event "Ricky Hatton VS Juan Lazcano", Champions League soccer event "Liverpool-Marseille", rugby event "England- New Zealand" at the Twickenham stadium.
The ones who watched the 3D events in the Sky studios said the whole thing was really breathtaking and exciting!
These tests were made on a 2500£ (about 2500 euros) 3D tv.
"We have shown it is a technical reality," Sky's director of strategic product development, Gerry O'Sullivan, told BBC News.
"Now we have to find a way to bring it to viewers."
Mr O'Sullivan said major TV manufacturers were beginning to look at building 3D sets and at January's Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas, a number of prototypes are expected to be on display.
He explained that for broadcasters, the move to 3D would not be anything like as expensive as the investment the industry had made in high-definition television.
"It's not hugely costly," he explained, "because it piggybacks on the investment in HD."

Hollywood is beginning to invest heavily in 3D movie production and in Japan some television channels are already broadcasting in 3D.
It is a technology that first surfaced in the 1950s, but modern digital technology has brought new interest from producers and manufacturers.

Mr O'Sullivan dismissed the idea that it would appeal only to a small minority of viewers.
"I heard HD described as a niche product," he said. "Now we've got nearly 600,000 HD customers."

Some days ago Sky also spoiled the fact that, in a few weeks, Sony is going to show a 3D Sony Bravia tv at CES 2009 in Las Vegas... could it be the 2500 euro 3D tv? 8)

Well from personal knowledge, the UK and Australia have historically been test beds for US tech industries. In the 80's satellite tv was tested there prior to its introduction in the US market.

I would say they are testing it, working out any bugs, and it will be offered as some sort of a "package" within the next 1-2 years. Hopefully inexpensive. :D
