WTF?? Why couldn't they do this for 3D?

3D > Ray Tracing

I can see them ruining games that have native 3D support built in.

It's a shame that they never put our coders and shaderhackers on the payroll.

Because of money. When you have popular youtubers like Linus tech tips still calling 3D "a gimmick" it doesn't help the fact most of the world has a negatively propagandized view of 3D gaming.
