Help me get back up to speed?

Post by kekewons »

I'm a semi-retired PC sim-racer (it's been about five years since I last raced. Very active for twenty years before that) looking to get back into it again over the winter months. Need a new Windows PC, for starters...but also could use some advice with regard to 3D projection these days. I have some experience with it dating all the way back to the 1024 x 768 days, but I'm out the loop on what are current projector offerings.

My last racing experience was using a 2D Mitsubishi in what I call "lifesize" mode (@1920 x1080P) and what I want is what I had before, but in 3D. I would love to have 4K resolution, but realistically that is still some years out, so something 1920 x 1080P is what I'm gunning for.

"Lifesize" is achieved, in this case by careful tweaking and measurement of the racing sims themselves, so that the various onscreen elements lie, directionally at what would be the correct angle (both horizontally and vertically), were they actually real.

An example of this can be seen here in a racing video put up some years back by a friend of mine from the EU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev7cFzgpJ7s

If you look carefully at the beginning as he climbs into the cockpit of this single-seater you can see the projected image (the screen itself in fact) lies just behind the wheel and what would be the instruments--his legs stick out through the screen onto the car pedals. I used for quite a few years exactly the same sort of rig myself and can always go back to it in 2D, but given that 3D projectors are now available at decent prices, it seems silly to miss out. I'd like to try it in 3D, and don't mind wearing silly glasses if that's the way to go these days.

Assume I can tweak the racing software itself for factors like "Field of View," and can similarly adjust the projector position overhead back and forth to acheive "true lifesize"....

So...do I want a "PC Ready" projector using active shutter glasses? Or something using a passive system?

Point me in the right direction, and thanks. :D

Before any direction, may I know budget, and if don't mind your state & country?

One more question, have you tried Oculus Rift, Htc Vive or PlayStation VR?

Thx for the reply: I'll spend $5-6K for the combination PC and projector rig if need be (US, CO). Every time I've gotten serious about building a racing PC it has cost something like $2000-2500 US, and it seems like the pricepoints remain about the same today when I either start putting together components or looking at a pre-built box.

The projector is a different matter, but will spend up to 3K or so (about twice what the Mitsubishi cost me) if need be.

Looking here: http://www.projectorcentral.com/top-3d-projectors.htm

...at the moment for recommendations, and the 3K figure refers to the street price of the ViewSonicLS820 (PC ready). Of course, that assums that short-throw is the best way to go (I have reasons to think it might be).

-----

My own prior with this Mitsubishi had my (flat) screen dropping down just behind my wheel which put it almost exactly 36" away from the lenses of my eyes when looking straight ahead (Remco's screen is a bit closer as I recall).
I want too, to say the image I saw was about 65" wide, but I can't swear to it this far removed....

Anyway, as I said, it's something close to that I hope to get back again, as a working base. For starters.

========

EDIT: No, I have not yet tried a VR rig, although it would potentially solve (at a relatively low cost) most of the issues I have, and ideas I want to try too...but of course you can't see your own hands. :-/

Be careful with 3D projectors. Some of them are not compatible with much of anything (usually the older ones, before HDMI 1.4a became standard). BUT the newer HDMI 1.4a sets can only do 720P 60Hz in 3D (even if the projector is higher resolution).

Your best bet is to check Nvidia 3D Vision projectors, which, AFAIK, are the only ones to get 1080P60Hz in 3D right now. See here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision- ... ments.html

The Acer Predator Z650 looks pretty good and came out a few months ago. I haven't really been following things, but it looks like a solid choice.

Not being able to see your hands shouldn't bother too much, When your entire gaming session
will be stationary seating in Your virtual cars seat. All controls position in real world can be
easily be memorized as they are not too many you can also reach to them by intuition.

They will always be there only as you are not moving physically in Racing Sims
as in room scale vr (Vive/Rift).

I think you must try HTC Vive / Rift + Project Cars or
PSVR + Drive club Vr with racing wheel setup before buying anything.

Just go for VR Demo and let me know what you found.

Thx, cyber. That's exactly the kind of reminder I needed. I DO remember those limitations from when I left off, although I'm struggling to find anything much more when I look at individual projector manuals. I find one or two which do 1080P, but only at 24Hz...and maybe one or two which will put out 1080i at 60Hz...but nothing yet that'll crank out true 1080P at 60Hz (per eye).

In any case, it does indeed seem Nvidia (probably with a RF emitter for the glasses) is the way forward.
