[Beginner] Generous Wii Help?

Hi FreePIE community.

I've been trying to set up a Wii controller for use with PC games by way of FreePIE. I've not had much success, and there are just way too many variables for me to figure out the nature of my problem(s). Can any kind and knowledgeable soul here offer some foundational, idiot-proof guidance for getting started with Wii development with FreePIE?

So far, I've successfully gotten the buttons working, but I can't seem to figure anything else out. Other folk's code that I've discovered and is purported to work does not do anything for me.
