Hi long time that I'm thinking about this problem.
Currently I am following both the roads, building a tracking accelerometer with Arduino + gy85 and a ir tracking with Freetrack and 3 ir led.
I wondered between the two systems is the best according to you? tacking the price? practicality? and the flexibility of the system?
I use to control freePIE
ir tracking? accelerometer tracking?

Re: ir tracking? accelerometer tracking?
Ir is cheaper and easier, but in all my triouts I couldn't find a sweet spot for 3 points; it always needed fine tuning in Freetrack and it can be a pain in the ass.
Never tried accelerometers except the phone ones and the phones always drift at least a bit. I'm thinking there's no perfect solution there either.
From my tracking experience, the poor 1-point IR tracking, altough it's limited to 2 DOF, is the most precise solution so far.
I am now thinking of a solution with 3 webcams (and freetrack instances), each one returning 2 DOF. That would probably prety accurate (at least in my mind depths).
