DK-50 Development Kit Creates Immediate, Real-World Possibilities for AR

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2016 -- Leading optical display technology developer Lumus has unveiled its DK-50 development kit at CES 2016 (Booth #26433), showcasing the most advanced augmented reality optics technology available to date.

A stand-alone augmented reality display dev kit that uses InfinityAR marker-less AR tracking, the DK-50 provides a strikingly immersive and unparalleled AR experience today. CES attendees will have an opportunity to experience true augmented reality in the real world with DK-50 demos at the Lumus booth.

"The DK-50 represents a significant achievement that combines the finest optical display in the market with the latest industry-leading marker-less AR tracking," Lumus CEO Ben Weinberger says. "We're extremely proud and excited to introduce the first and only optical display technology that enables smart eyeglasses to deliver a truly believable AR experience. Lumus technology makes it completely achievable right now to generate a large-scale, high-resolution, bright virtual image, with a lightweight wearable eyeglass display."

The DK-50 glasses are equipped with twin stereo cameras and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), which allows application developers access to real-time mapping and tracking, for the creation of augmented reality applications limited only by the developer's imagination.

The AR glasses not only project an overlay directly on the wearer's main line of sight, but also provide:
  • Real-time mapping of the environment and complete freedom of movement in all directions
  • Widest fully transparent field of view available (40 degrees)
  • Binocular, and high resolution (720p)
  • Onboard Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processor running the Android™ mobile operating system
  • SDK and Android application that turns any mobile phone into a remote control, allowing mouse-like interface, smart glasses application launcher, access to settings, and much more
The enabling optical technology within the new DK-50 is the Lumus Optical Engine, which consists of the patented Light-Guide Optical Element (LOE), a reflective waveguide and the Micro Display Pod, a miniature projector. Together they create the virtual image of a transparent, full-color projection over the wearer's surroundings, seamlessly blending digital content into the physical world. Wearable eyeglass displays built with this breakthrough technology can now be compact and comfortable for the first time.

Lumus already has their first customer for the DK-50 development kit: SUNCORPORTATION, a leading Japanese IT and entertainment company, which recently announced a partnership with Lumus and InfinityAR. "SUNCORP is proud to be the first customer introducing an end product based on the Lumus DK-50 design," says Masanori Yamaguchi, CEO of SUNCORPORTION. "We believe our enterprise and industrial customers will greatly benefit from this game-changing augmented reality platform." SUNCORP will introduce AceReal, AR glasses developed for enterprise applications, at Wearable Expo (Jan. 13 – 15, 2016, at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center).
