[DIY] Dioxide HMD

Post by Savaro »

a long time watching the forum, and I finally have something to show^^

Hardware:
n070icg-l21- Display
HDMI+DVI+VGA Controller Board M.NT68676.2A for display
MPU-9150 - sensor
USB to I2C IIC adapter
Welding mask
5x pocket loupe magnifier with Aspheric Lens
dvi connectors + dvi cable 1.5m, for display lvds extension and its used for balancing of helmet.
tons of wire for display connection to dvi connector
usb connector + cable, for sensor cable extension.
[/list]

Software:
  • self writed imu for sensor with 3dof with mouse emulation via directInput, in plans - to hack rift sdk xDD
TriDef 3D for current for tests, in plans - make personal render for it or get compatibility with rift render, cos it have same design.
Pros:
  • cost < 200$
Cons:
  • not working for current
in this momet it is still under development
Unfortunately the original plan to use the 5.6 inch display failed, and also in the process of collecting, I have burned the display backlight.
but errors into account, I plan to use the same scheme slightly different display. looking toward to 7 inch.

I am currently faced with the fact that it is impossible to write a universal wrapper for rift sdk and use mouse emulation - not a good idea. honestly then I stalled >_<
but it is extremely necessary for further tests. =_=

finally made new extension for lvds, because the old screen was a little different interface.
that was so #$%king hard)

how to do it:
1. Take lvds trail
2. Cut it down the middle
3. Take twisted pair (lan cable)
4. Plumbing that would make elongation
5. Check and repeat until the cable will not work.
6. Elongation cable cut in the middle.
7. Solder to dvi connector.
8. fill connection div to cable points with superglue or similar, so they dont move during assembly

the main problem is that the resistance of all cables should be almost identical.
otherwise would be huge mistakes noise image.

if someone need pinout of my div to lvds, i can write.

finally assembled helmet.
weighs a little more than planned due to screen damage.

but it works.
in real games not yet experienced, but with YouTube video looks quite workable.

after many tests with tridef 3d, had to make a lot of additions to the design.
although in principle they all relate to the lens: place exactly against the eye, and had to turn over aspheric lenses - do not give distortion as the original rift.

I think turned out quite playable, if make a lightweight casing.

i make override display driver so display determined as "rift dk1", but for obvious reasons, the sensor is not available.
demos run ok, but need some testing.

The Oculus Rift DK1 uses 7x lenses, not 5x. You may have more success by trying those : http://ultraoptix.com/products/sv-2lpled

What did you use to connect the LVDS cable to the DVI cable. There was something in between.
