Camera Rail System

I have been looking into rail systems for shooting non moving subjects for lenticular printing. There are off the shelf solutions like the http://www.mitton3d.com and even a typewriter that has been converted into a camera rail http://www.midwestlenticular.com/design-tips. I would love to build a rail system from a stripped down printer or scanner, has anyone attempted something like this? Seems like the functionality is all there with some way to modify the control of the unit.
