Samsung releasing the first HMD for Oculus Android Platform?

Post by MSat »

It seems like this subforum is almost dead when it comes to Oculus news, which I read about all over the place. I'm assuming everyone is getting their fix elsewhere as well..

Anyway, I thought this was interesting: http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/30/sams ... rtnership/

So Samsung will be providing Oculus with hardware expertise (in the form of displays) in exchange for Oculus' software expertise. Since this Samsung product seems focused on mobile, it's looking like they'll be using the VR for Android platform Oculus has talked about before that John Carmack seems to be spearheading. It's quite interesting that Oculus is working with other hardware manufacturers (hard to say if this will be strictly limited to Samsung), as it might indicate the greater interest in the software/platform side, creating a sort of iTunes/Steam/Etc for VR. Of course it's still important for Oculus to release their own hardware for the time being, but I wonder if that'll end up changing in the future as VR grows and more companies get involved.
