WIRELESS OCULUS RIFT <100$ (Video up!)

Well, its under $100 if you have spare battery packs lying around.

So using the Vrwiki I put together an LF AN-WL100W and a Cables Unlimted Wireless USB Hub to send wireless HDMI and tracking data.

It's powered by a Hyper Juice battery (1 for the Wireless HDMI unit and 1 USB for Oculus power) and Startech Cables (To power the rift, the cables unlimited dongle just needs USB cord splicing) and another USB battery pack.

LG AN-WL100W ($34.64) : http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p ... 80#p118380 http://www.lg.com/us/tv-accessories/lg- ... -media-kit https://plus.google.com/101948760925084 ... tdqMZqCzEA http://www.amazon.com/LG-ANWL100W-Digit ... 003I6718M/

Cables Unlimited USB-WR2000 Wireless USB Kit with Transmitter and Receiver with Base
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 30X0ZC8453

Tracking and Video have very low latency. Its very playable, almost no difference pluging it in. I'll post a video after work.

THIS ONLY WORKS ON WINDOWS 7! (and below) Unless someone can find a way to make the WUSB drivers work on windows 8 (I tried and failed)

So the wireless HDMI box was like 25$ on amazon and the wireless usb kit was about 55 on Newegg.

Nice! I have 5 of those LG devices (one connected to my LG TV). I was planning to do exactly this when I get some free time.

One thing I want to explore is sending tracking data back over the return channel in these video devices (normally used for remote control signals so the TV can change the input source on the video transmitter). I have no idea what the bandwidth or latency of the return channel is, but it may be able to use periodic differential updates of the tracker orientation.

Oh that's a great idea. I have no idea how to begin modifying the control box to output the data through a different cable though. Those cables can send Ethernet and other high speed things right? Although you might still have a problem with pin 19 and the HDMI black -> green problem. I'm not sure if cutting the pin 19 wire and then trying to send data through that cable will go well. At least, that's a problem I have with the LG streaming box thing on non-proprietary LG TV's

You know, you can hook up multiple WUSB hubs. I wonder if i can get both tracking and razer hydra data wireless. I can't test it now though. I'll post it with the video.

I have one of these LG boxes already too- Did you cut the transmitter or receivers down to size at all, or just using them as is.

I have an old laptop power supply supplying the receiver- I guess I'd have to look at a battery replacement.

Nope I didn't modify the receiver at all. I was forced to use a Hyper Juice because it can output the required 17-18V to power the wireless receiver. Here are some photos of my crappy set-up.

http://s539.photobucket.com/user/Soiidus/library/RIFT

Yeah, I used the velcro that LG receiver came with and stuck it on, on the other-side, there's more velcro to velcro to the rift control box.

The whole thing fits inside a small H&M sling bag thing.

Looks pretty good. Why haven't you snipped pin 19 yet? I guess finding it inside the cable jacket is no walk in the park?

Silly battery question- Could you use an 18 volt battery, like a cordless screwdriver battery? Those are a lot cheaper than hyper juice. Might even provide longer runtime.

I just happened to have a hyper juice lying around.

Im sure you could as long as it provides the same 2A 18V DC output. Check out that google plus link for specifics. Finding PIN 19 isn't easy ahaha, what I originally did was stuff a toothpick end into the pin 19 slot of each side of the HDMI cable, unfortunately, after several unplugs and replugs, I think that broke the cable so now I have to go buy a new one. It did however work though.

Not meaning to double post, but since the wireless USB acts as a standard USB port, you can add a USB hub and plug the rift tracker and a Razer Hydra into it. I'll post a video later, I just fixed the PIN 19 Black to green color error on the rift and ran around (Literally) playing Bioshock Infinite.

I plugged in a flash drive into the wireless USB, it copied a file from the flash drive to the desktop at about 6.66 MB/second and copied a file to the flash drive at about 2.30 MB/ second

Doing some more testing. The tracking data in the hub along with the hydra adds a lot of latency. Especially with the Hydra. The Hydra, when wired to a standard USB port will react very quickly. The Hydra put into the WUSB adapter will perform slower then it by a very small amount but when coupled with the rift tracking data in a USB hub both the head tracking data and the hydra (in the Sixense Tuscany Demo) preformed noticeably slower then when they were wired. I'm uncertain if it has to do with my USB hub or not. Does anyone know how to accurately measure this data?

I think I have wireless interference in the area, when you use the Wireless LG HDMI set, make sure you aren't using a device that operates on the 5GHz band.

You must have caused a run on those wireless USB extenders. They seem to be out of stock everywhere. Does anyone know of any similar products? Searching for wireless USB is no fun. :(

Clarifiy a few things for me:
1. The USB-WR2000 dongle has a built in battery which powers its own transmitter and can send 5 volts to the hydra? This battery recharges when the dongle is plugged into the base unit?

2. You need 18 volts @ 2 amps to power the HDMI receiver. You use one Hyper Juice for that. You need 5 or 9 volts (I think) for the Rift control box, and you use another Hyper Juice for that? Is the hyper juice configurable for voltage, or do you just happen to have an 18 v one and a 5-9 v one?

I think that's it for now.

If this worked as claimed- it might be a better solution. Wireless video, audio and USBs all on one device. Of course, the lag could be worse than your current solution... and it's essentially a USB video card, which is probably the real problem... but you'd be down to a single device with room for the USB from both the Rift and Hydra- all you'd need is the DVI dongle from the Rift kit.

I wouldn't bother with the DVI streaming tech, theres a reason why the old 2008 Wireless USB standard products died. I have not tested their other products, but I'm certain that the there would be too much lag on the video feed, which is why I'm using the LG streamer.

If you'd like to test the other one, let me know what you think, although I don't think that DVI and WUSB thing can be powered by a single USB cable (which is why I got the WR2000 instead).

The Hyper Juice actually has a 5V USB port in addition to a 17V DC out port (So it can charge a macbook and an IPad off the same battery)

The hyper juice normally outputs about 16V (like what the mac charger uses) but can scale up to 18V just like the mac chargers when the laptop asks for more power when its doing crazy stuff. I took advantage of that fact to power the wireless receiver.

I use the Hyper Juice to power both the Rift and the Wireless HDMI receiver. I use another USB battery pack (Like an ITrent (im actually using the PS Vita Portable Charger) to power the WUSB dongle. The 5V on the battery pack is enough to power the dongle, hub and hydra.

So no, the WR2000 does NOT have an internal battery and must be powered externally via either included A/C adapater or spliced USB to, um i think its 5mmx2mm plug head and a battery pack.

(If you do end up getting one, just like the Oculus, the dashed side of the AC cable goes to the Red USB power wire and the black one with writing goes straight to the black wire and it just works)

In terms of other products, IOGear, Belkin and DLINK have WUSB products, but I think they would require a lot more power to power the WUSB hub then the Cables Unlimited one (1 port vs 4 ports)

I actually misplaced my PS Vita portable charger last night so im running around with a macbook air on standby and using those USB ports to power the rift. I am however, to run around the (without the hydras) with little to no latency. I wanted to keep the package small. I'll post more photos tonight after my midterms.

I think we should wait for the WiGig standard WUSB products to come out. something about 60ghz at 7gbits WUSB devices.

Wireless USB Hub (F5U302) Belkin
http://www.everythingusb.com/toshiba-dy ... 17672.html

in conclusion

Rift = 5v usb -> HJ
WUSB = 5v usb ->PS Vita Portable Charger
LG Receiver = 18v DC -> HJ

You could always try using a WLAN USB device server on a 5Ghz channel. I would be worried that it would interfere with the LG receiver
though.
http://www.amazon.com/Silex-HighSpeedWl ... B008R5L2T8

Some other guy used this in his W Oculus experiment and it apparently worked well, I wouldnt know how to get a battery pack on the thing to prevent blowups though.

I made a new thread about using the idea of using a mobile device and an OTG cable with the oculus to send tracking data wirelessly. If that can go through with littly latency, we might be able to bypass the whole WUSB shenanigans.

I have a latency tester and all the other components to test this. What I am lacking is time... Perhaps soon...

If somebody in the Minnesota Twin Cities area wants to try this, I could loan all the hardware (except Rift and PC).

I have my Cables Unlimited USB-DD3000 WUSB *BOX* in front of me now, but the device got put away somewhere else, probably in a storage tub with similar components. I will look for it one of these days RSN...
;)

WUSB is rather hard to find at times, since the chipset was single-sourced and the manufacturer went out of business years ago. Cables Unlimited is also defunct, so all that is available is old stock on amazon or ebay.

The USB-DD3000 also passes USB video over the connection, but it seemed rather laggy to me. I will have to try again, perhaps with different drivers. Using the LG adapters with HDMI is much simpler and better IMHO, and just use WUSB for the non-video USB devices. USB 2.0 is rather slow for video anyway...

Thanks for the initiative guys! The latency test is important so that we can see what the cost of going wireless is, and which device has least latency.
But I guess there is no way to measure the USB latency (delay in head-tracking)?

Are you experiencing any intermittent latency or USB hiccups in the head tracking? People with Asus WAVI have reported such issues:

You can measure USB latency by using high speed video to track the movements, or some other low latency physical tracking as a baseline measurement to compare against. Preferable a wired reference.

I picked up a ANWL100W last weekend. Ran like a charm on a 15v universal power supply. Only had time to play with it for a couple of minutes, but the latency was imperceptible to me on my 60hz monitor. If anyone's still interested, I can record my monitor with a ps3 eye @ 120hz - this should be able to tell us if the latency is over 8ms.

On noes! Not that "all radiation is harmful" thing again!

Image

You do realize that light and heat (and even body heat) are radiation, right?
Image

And there are studies that show that small amounts of IONIZING radiation can actually stimulate your immune system and make you live longer, as I posted before...

You get far more radiation exposure flying in a commercial aircraft. Do you fly, or do you stick to ground transportation?

Do you realize that digital circuits (and especially LCD panels) emit significant electromagnetic radiation? Aren't you afraid of putting your eyeballs and brain so close to your Rift display?

Or was one of your Rift mods to wrap everything in tinfoil to protect yourself?

And as I mentioned before, most anti-wireless propaganda is based on the same flawed cell-phone study that was discredited long ago.

Just curious because you seem to post anti-wireless posts in many threads where wireless transmission is discussed...

EDIT: The "study" by children at your linked post did not take into account differences such as ventilation, proximity to a heat source, and other things (such as perhaps letting one sample dry out and not reporting it). That came to mind while reading it, and even the article says a "real" scientific study may be done. But probably not reported unless the results agree with the anti-wireless crowd...

Pulled it out of the parts bin of 'parallel problems' that were solved in other areas of technology.

- It seems to need a line of sight (people couldn't stand between transmitter and receiver), was it problematic when turning the head more than 90° ?
- The range seems to be quite limited also (<10 feet), probably not a problem when sitting but could be when standing.
- One reviewer said it was overheating after 30 minutes and started to disconnect, anyone else experienced this ?

Power hack:

-Buy a universal power supply (17-24V at ~ 2A) I set mine to 18.5V
-Cut the proprietary 20 pin control cable
-Find the heavier gauge red and black wires (the heavy white wire works as a ground too but may cause the dongle to squeal when powered under 24V at initial start-up)
-Red is +
-Black is -
-Individually tape up all remaining leads so they don't short (we can play with these later...)
