Hello all,
I'm new to the lands of MTBS. I have done some searching to no avail. I am currently developing a VR Game. The Rifts are moving slow (mine maybe arriving August from an early April order), I am looking to build my own units for temporary use until the Rift arrive.
Can a DIY HMD be compatible with the Rift SDK, or UDK, Cryengie? Cryengine is not officially supported by the Rift. But let say some of the mods that have been written for the Rift can be used on DIY's?
When building the DIY's does the hardware components take a play in it? let say the right tracker, display? Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards

I believe the rift uses a Hillcrest labs tracker, the screen is pretty much a generic 7" with decent res. The lenses can be sourced individually or from a loupe such as used by watch makers.
You can reverse engineer it from this video:

Good luck

The early Rift prototypes used the Hillcrest tracker, but the actual developer kits are using a custom Oculus tracker.

Correct, the Rift is not using the Hillcrest. It seems the have a modified customed board.
After some studying is like they took someting like this board which is used for flying toy helicopters and slightly modified it with additional components.
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/70542 ... U6050.html
The sensor on the link constitute of the following : Chip: MPU6050 + HMC5883L + MS5611
So the Rift rather than use the MPU6050, it uses the MPU6000 (essentially the same.)
and rather than HMC5883, it uses the HMC5983.
The circuit board is different as it has a cortex-m3. I heard they use this to avoid using the internal sensor fusion of the MPU6000. Maybe Geekmaster can explain it because I read about it from one of his post.
This in essence makes the sensor board wayyyyy cheaper than the Yost and the other contenders. yet providing good performance.
I happen to be in China temporarily and I have been searching for components for my own DIY.
But still remain even if I were to use the same components, will it be compatible with the Rift?
I;m planning to put something simple until my rift arrives, but they are moving slow.

Wow, I didn't think it's possible, but you can actually run UDK made levels with a DIY rift with Vireio Perception and FreePie (if you use head tracker like me). Just copy d3d9.dll and libfreespace.dll into [Your UDK folder]/Binaries/Win32. Then simply run the UDK.exe file from the same folder and select the map you previously saved in UDK Editor. Mind you, this will make UDK Editor itself stop working, so if you go back to editing your level just rename d3d9.dll to something like _d3d9.dll while you edit and then rename back when you want to run the game in Rift mode.
Amazing, now we can have a DIY rift and the ability to create some DIY environments A dream come true indeed.
