3D Monitor vs 3DTV

Post by jaden »

Hello all, I recently purchased a 55'' Sony NX720, I've watched a few 3D blurays and they all look really good on this TV. I'm very impressed with the 3D but it does suffer from some slight ghosting here and there but not much to complain about. This is my first 3DTV purchase. However when I view the same content on my 23" ASUS VG236HE it just looks so much better. Ghosting is not an issue. Does it have anything to do with me hooking up with dual-link DVI through the monitor? Or does 3D content just look better on a monitor vs TV?

Typically(not always) an image/video will look better as the screen size decreases. So a HD(1080p) movie will look better on a 22 or 24 inch TV(monitor) than on a 55 inch one because the DPI(dots per inch) increases as size decreases for a particular resolution. The more the dpi the better the quality. But as you move away from the screen this effect becomes less apparent.

And of course larger monitor always gives you a better feel. So this feel combined with the viewing distance makes TV a better choice. But if you have a small monitor and a big tv side by side at the same resolution you can see the quality difference(atleast if you move closer to the screen).

Are you saying that the 3D content is better in the asus 23 inch monitor than on the sony 55 inch tv? I mean the 3D experience(like the pop out and depth effect)?

The 3D experience is better on the TV. When viewing 3D blu-rays I experience less ghosting on the monitor though. Maybe its something on my end, I've only had the tv for 2 weeks now and perhaps I need to adjust the 3D settings

Other than ghosting, the 3D effects(like out of the screen pop and depth) are better in TV right? Cause I'm also in a dilemma whether to buy a 3dtv or monitor.

I definitely think the 3D effects are better on the larger 55" screen. It feels a lot more immersive on the TV.

You'll probably find that the 3D effect is more pronounced if you are sitting further away from the screen.

If the Asus monitor is on your desk, you're probably sitting fairly close to it...? Try stepping back a bit, and see if the sense of depth increases at all.

As for the ghosting, it may simply be that the Asus is better than the Sony!

I have an older Samsung monitor, and the ghosting is quite pronounced. When I view the same material using an Acer projector, the ghosting is virtually non-existent.

I have seen a lot of different 3D setups, and by far the most impressive is on an HDTV (between 50-60"). Even more impressive than the movie theaters I would say. Its strange, because you would think bigger would be better, but not always. I am still not sure exactly why this is, but something about a 60" screen viewed from around 8' just looks the best.
