First allow me to say thanks for all of those who have contributed. My 3D success was in no small part due to the work of others who shared.
My goal was to play games in stereo 3D as well as watch [the limited supply of] 3D videos. My setup is basically: Quad Intel, Nvidia 7950 card, XP, Nvidia XP drivers, Samsung HL61A750 DLP TV, shutterglasses bundled with Tridef software, simple registry change to enable Nvidia support of DLP checkerboard
My observations: - No quad core problems as reported by others - great Nvidia compatibility with FS9 & Doom3, NoLimits rollercoaster sim - real good Nvidia compatibility with Quake3 Arena and Call of Duty 4 [edit] COD4 not working well with Nvidia [/edit] - excellent graphical performace, even at high resolutions in S3D - I suppose I will ultimately need the IZ3D drivers as directX and openGL evolve...
- whenever you switch to 3D mode on the TV it goes very bright and a slightly red tint is visible to naked eye. This red tint is not visible with the glasses. I read somewhere this is to compensate for the glasses?? - the TV is so bright and I needed to reduce the brightness to reduce ghosting [edit] Ghosting problem is fixed [/edit]
- because of the checkerboard loss, small fonts in MS Windows become almost unreadable - the checkerboard loss was visible in the two histograms in MS windows->task manager->performance - so far, the checkerboard loss is NOT perceivable in games and video
- the inexpensive glasses that come bundled with the Tridef software seem cheap - if I hold the glasses up side down, one lens goes black, but I can still see through it. I think this is causing my ghosting. [edit] Ghosting fixed [/edit]
Here is my biggest contribution. As long as you send 60 Hz, this Samsung DLP will support 3D in a variety of common resolutions by centering the output on the screen.
Straight from the manual: 3D Effect Mode is only available in HDMI3/DVI input signal (640x480@60Hz, 800x600@60Hz, 1024x768@60Hz, 1280x720@60Hz, 1280x1024@60Hz, 1360x768@60Hz or 1920x1080p@60Hz).
Questions: [edit] The ghosting problem has been fixed. [/edit] I am experiencing minor ghosting with bright colors. I am guessing this crosstalk is being caused by the cheap glasses. Can someone confirm this? Where is the best place to buy Crystaleyes 3 glasses? Are there other glasses that are confirmed as good?
I notice that the Vista Nvidia drivers support "Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare." If the Vista drivers still have per game configurations in the registry, could someone look at COD4 and let me know what is there?
Thanks again, Not Livid

Hey
I have the HL5087S and only tried google earth with the tri-def driver. After some fiddling it looked 3D with old elsa shutterglasses, but it was a small box in the center of the screen. Honestly though, $50 for an incomplete program is just asking a little too much, even if $5 per game thereafter for only a handful of games. A shame Tri-Def could only think of this method to make money instead of bundling a bunch of 3D demos that will quickly show it off besides google earth.
I wondered about the red tint while in 3D mode, someone at the time said it shouldn't be there but you cannot see it with the shutterglasses. If you know a quick way to test a 3D movie on it using the 3dplayer software(need to dl the free trial) please let me know what 3D setting you used on the samsung hdtv itself(l/r, or r,l in the tv menu) and also what stereo option in the drop down control panel. I cannot remember if it was the IO display setting or the seereal. I tried the direct 3 pin vesa connection from an old elsa dongle but couldn't get any results. It would be great to see more Samsung owners post any results since I only got this tv for HD gaming, LED light engine, and 3D capable. I did try the checkerboard registry fix that resets each time, but the samsung put up a fight the entire time.
My rig is dual core, same vid card. Right now the z800 and diy planar work great.. an iz3D should be arriving in a few days so I'll see what it is all about. I wasn't aware that this hdtv would play any game with nvidia driver pairs... please correct me if I'm wrong!
Agreed, the thing is very very bright with intense colors.. watching a dvd in the dark and a white screen comes on and you have to shield your eyes because it hurts like looking at the sun.
Peace

StereoGaming4Me - Small Google Earth: Was your desktop set to 1920x1080? I guess the red tint is normal... For movies, I downloaded Stereoscopic Player ( http://3dtv.at). It can output directly to 3D DLPs, and there are a few sample HD movies there. It is within movies that I notice the most ghosting... Quote: please let me know what 3D setting you used on the Samsung hdtv itself(l/r, or r,l in the tv menu) Sometimes I need Mode 1 and other times I need Mode 2. It can change when I power cycle the TV. In order to combat ghosting, I set the TV to 'movie mode' and drop the brightness and contrast as well... I really want to know if this sounds like a problem that can be fixed by better glasses. To enable 3D DLP output, I perform 3 steps in the old Nvidia panel. 1) Change it to SeeReal [apply] 2) double click both registry changes 3) Change resolution to 1920x1080 and set the refresh to 60Hz Otherwise I leave stereo turned on and the other settings seem to persist. I have been very impressed with the compatibility of the Nvidia drivers with Doom 3 and FS9. Quake 3 arena is also very good. I thought COD4 was in stereo, but I was tricked by the post processing layer. If you push it aside using convergence, the 3D is great, but the gun seems too close and its stereo is broken... The other thing I tried was 'NoLimits Rollercoaster sim'. It works brilliantly. Microsoft XP includes a couple of 3D screensavers that also work in 3D... My experience suggests the Nvidia drivers are compatible with a wide range of games. I tried the latest IZ3D drivers (1.09), but the only thing that worked in stereo was the 3D screensavers that ship with XP. MS FS9 crashes on startup to desktop, and COD4 also crashes on startup back to the desktop. My other OpenGL games are currently not supported. Question: Do you experience any ghosting with your setup? Thanks, Not Livid

hey not livid,
Thank you kindly for the reply! At the time I was testing its 3D capabilities there was a perpetual BSOD with many sets of nvidia driver pairs, so I was trying 800 x 600 because at the hardware level my card just won't do 640x480 full screen, minimum is 800 x 600. I tried the conservative approach to finding a good working pair of drivers. I know the hdtv can do 1080p so in theory I should be able to set the card to 1080p as well.. my icons should be very very tiny I presume but still crisp.
I'm not sure I'm understanding why at times in the samsung menu you need both 1 and 2 to operate the shutterglasses, do you think it is a glitch in the tv req. that.. it's odd you mention it as I've found that with a pair of elsa shutters, I got stereo on both settings as well but only on google earth. Bioshock w/Tri-Def demo driver did show in 3D and actually looked really good - at the cost of displaying in a small box in the center of the screen. I'm not sure how far you push your video card, but I've been using a 1280 x 1024 display so the card isn't really being pushed to its limits. Is it safe to try running Bioshock in 3D at 1080p with max detail which is what I would run it at normally with v-sync turned off? If I do not then it has to be a lower resolution where the tv will default to a smaller resolution because something.. not sure where, doesn't want to keep the same resolution I'm specifying at the pc. Odd. I'll have to test it again sometime soon.
Edit: For the samsung when I tested it I don't remember ghosting being much of an issue w/93.71 pair.. but it was a small 12" diagonal box always in the center so perhaps in full screen I'll see a difference. I'll try it soon and post.
Thanks!
Carl

Howdy StereoGaming4Me... Quote: I'm not sure I'm understanding why at times in the samsung menu you need both 1 and 2 to operate the shutterglasses, do you think it is a glitch in the tv req. that.. I'm not sure why it changes, but I only have to change modes after a power cycle of the TV. Consequently it is not really a problem as I've learned to spot it when the eyes are reversed. Quote: I'm not sure how far you push your video card, but I've been using a 1280 x 1024 This seems to be the highest, commonly supported resolution of the limited number of games I've tried. I use that resolution a lot, and it does not seem too small when the TV centers it within its 1920x1080 panel. The rollercoaster sim will push 1080p with great 3D... I'm not sure about Bioshock 'cranked up.' Another random observation. The TV 'cuts off' all four edges so your desktop is missing Icons and you cannot see the 3 min, max, close buttons in the top right corner. I think this is called overscan... Is there a way to combat this problem such that the desktop is within the bounds of the displayed region? I see most of the ghosting with bright colors in bright scenes... Thanks a million. Not Livid

Hi If I'm not mistaken, in the nvidia control panel somewhere there is a setting for normal, overscan, and one other option -. Personally I have never interacted or used any of these features, but I remember something about it sounding a lot like your problem there. Actually, wait now I remember using these options before precisely on the Samsung monitor but wasn't sure what exactly was changing. If the Samsung does have any brightness/contrast controls, perhaps adjusting those instead of a different display mode like game/movie/sports, and adjusting the light source in the room to above you or to the side may help to combat the ghosting too. In theory, or the floating theory is that if the pupils are too dilated from it being too dark than you will see more ghosting. I'm hoping to find a buried hdmi cable in the next day to plug the pc back up to the tv for testing. Peace

At the current state of things, my best recommendation for 3D gaming is to get an ATI card. I know it sounds odd, as NVidia has always been the place to go for 3D, but with ATI's deal with iz3D making their drivers free for DLP users, it's a no-brainer. The drivers are VERY good, and work with a VERY large number of titles. As for Movies, as stated, use Stereoscopic Player. It does a great job of playback from any stereo format and converting to DLP's checkerboard.

Hi Not Livid. Did you find a way to get rid of the ghosting? I got my HL-61a750 today. I am disappointed about this ghosting thing. I thought that DLP should have no issues with ghosting.

I thought that DLP should have no issues with ghosting. Try adjusting the brightness & contrast on the samsung, it's enough to blind a person when it is a white screen. Also try tilting the shutterglasses slightly clockwise on your face when you see any ghosting.. those lcd shutters may have a layer of polarized film - my elsa shutters do. Is iz3d media player free to use? Is SLI dual card setup available for nvidia series 7 cards, or only 8 and 9 series which bring troubles and woe to stereo enthusiasts? thank you for any advice, perhaps this is the wrong forum for my questions, peace!

Quote: Hi Not Livid. Did you find a way to get rid of the ghosting? I got my HL-61a750 today. I am disappointed about this ghosting thing. I thought that DLP should have no issues with ghosting. Yes I finally worked out my problem, and the 3D is perfect. The problem appears to be a timing issue between my Nvidia 7950 card on defaults and the Samsung. I [finally] realized that some resolutions were perfect but 1080p had ghosting. This led me to try changes within Nvidia's "advanced timing" page. Boom - problem solved for all resolutions. I now have rock solid images with no ghosting regardless of the image or the TV's picture mode/brightness/contrast. Here is the exact solution to the timing issue between my Nvidia 7950 and my Sammy HL61A750:
1. Start with your desktop at 1920x1080
2. Go to: Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> GE FORCE 7950 GT -> Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates -> Advanced Timing
3. Write down or screen shot your original settings
4. Choose "Coordinated video timing - Reduced Blanking (CVT-RB)" from "Timing Standard" drop down box. Then [OK] to save.On my system the settings are changed to: (I'm mostly clueless about this.) Horizontal Pixels: Front Porch: 48 Back Porch: 80 Sync Polarity: + Front End Active: 1920 Sync Width: 32 Back End Active: 1920 Vertical Lines: Front Porch: 3 Back Porch: 23 Sync Polarity: - Front End Active: 1080 Sync Width: 5 Refresh Rate: 59.93 Back End Active: 1080 Important: Be sure and write down your original settings. I found no easy way to figure out exactly what they were... I will go back and edit my original post with a few changes... StereoGaming4Me: Bioshock works great with IZ3D 1.09 drivers. Neat game, I am glad you mentioned it... I hope this helps, Not Livid

Thanx for the Info! I tried to adjust the timings like you described. Difference is thats an ATI Setup. Downloaded Powerstrip to make the changes. But i had no success. If i use your Settings. The TV shows a message that the mode is not supported. Never got rid of the ghosting.
Ghosting is nearly eliminated if i set sharpness to 0 in TV Menu. Only light red and blue is an issue then.
As you tried to find out the right settings, got it sometimes better and sometimes worse? Or did ghosting go away right after you found the settings you gave to us?
EDIT: Wohooo tried it with my Nvidia Setup and entered the setting you gave. GHOSTING IS GONE!!! Thats pefect! Thank you very much Not Livid

i want to look into this more, especially if it also applies to Plasmas.
But to know what has been changed i need to know your original values - otherwise i have no idea what setting/value is responsible for the ghosting to be eliminated. Could you post your original values for comparison? Then i can try this on my plasma.
