Mark forums read

Neil what am I doing wrong, before the site automatically marked all forums read for me after I left, so when I came back in a few days the new stuff I hadn't read because I wasn't interested in wasn't showing up as still unread, but now it does and it seems I have to do extra work and click a button to get that stuff to go away, what am I doing wrong? I am lazy and the carpal tunnel is already so bad that every visit 1 extra click saved over a lifetime will do a body good.

One person's problem is another person's solution!

It was a bug that made the forum forget what you hadn't read yet. Don't make us break the laws of physics for you!

Neil

Argh! And with god's proclamation, a million wrists and fingers cry out with future increased health bills to treat repetitive stress injury! I remember reading once that steve jobs walked into the room where his developers were praising themselves with how fast the new mac booted up, and he said if they could just cut 5 more seconds off of that boot time how much time that would save humanity and how his insistance saved the world so much time collectively that he truly must have been the second coming of christ. Certainly a renaissance man like yourself Neil can get some web developer slave to increase the robustness of the laws of physics so that some of us exist outside the black hole and those of us that opt to do so can exist with the physics inside the black hole?!? For those of us that like the old system, can't you get the bug to reassert itself for those groups of users? There must be a way, I believe in you Neil. My wrists and joints in my fingers pray Allah will bless them.

There is a way. It requires bringing the server's matter/antimatter mix to 5.2 million degrees to generate a forum implosion, but it has never been tried before! :!:

According to our research, there is a 15% risk that this can cause a time warp, and our forums will be reset to the age of anaglyph glasses.

Neil

I tend to agree that we need a link that we can click that marks all forums read. It's getting a bit cumbersome to click each forum and then inside that forum click all posts read. It's making my reading of these forums quite annoying.. sorry Neil. This is a basic thing that most forums do have.....

If I might also add.. there are just too many forums here. Some are rarely used, some can be combined. It looks too busy. This is just MY opinion.

Ok. Next week we are getting started on another upgrade.

While we are doing that, we can try to find a mod to do what you ask. Shouldn't be hard.

Neil

It looks like that if you use the "View new posts" link, it correctly shows only new posts but the posts stay displayed in yellow if you manually go in the forums.

Ahh I see it now! Thank you! My wrist thanks you, my shoulder and elbow too! I rarely, if ever, scroll down to those last few forums.

I knew about that button before I even posted, before I didn't have to click that button, but now I do, adding to my RSI and CTS problems, you are making my medical bills go up by taking away something that used to work better for me, please bring it back!

I think what martinlandau is saying is that before you made the change, when we clicked the view new posts it searched for new posts. If you clicked it again afterward, it did not show the same posts again. Now, if we don't click Mark forums read after using view new posts, the next time you use view new posts, the same posts come up in the search.

The view new posts button doesn't seem to be working since Sunday. Its displaying a long list of threads I've already read. Whats the deal? It was working great before.

there have been no changes to the code on sunday. only today but on a totally different part of the forums. i think that the button is displaying the latest topics, and the latest ones are marked yellow if you didnt visit them.. for me it works just normally.

what browser are you using?

what are the differences between saturday and today?

Usually I see about 5 topics in the 'view new posts' which would list from the last time I checked. Now I am seeing like 30-40 threads since Sunday with no regard to when I've been on the site (multiple times each day). Until now it has been working perfectly fine.

i didnt use it previously so i cant compare.. but to me it shows a history of posts, and only the new ones are marked yellow... can you confirm?

No thats not how it was for me. For me the threads are marked in blue either way but only list the threads updated since I last logged on to the site. Usually this would be in the range of 5-10 posts. This is a very easy way to check the site without having to check each sub-section for new threads. Now it just adding the new threads without clearing out the old ones. I'm not sure what the problem is or what has changed on the site since Sunday. But something happened.

I verified. Even if I click, Mark forums read or use view new posts once, the using view new post button afterward pulls up all post since december 7.

I think that the way to work that would make sense would be for view new posts to work as before you updated the code or to bring only the yellow posts.

Normally, using view new posts automatically marks the forums as read (with some delay). That's how it seems to work elsewhere. I don't know how it works but if you use a new posts button, it won't straight away remove the yellow, it will do it maybe a few hours later. Look at the iZ3D forums.

ok, i checked and it is working as it should. the few posts were displayed only on the old version of the forums. on the new one it displays all but shows the newer ones highlited. (on the dark template it is yellow)

you can test it here at the official phpbb forums: http://www.phpbb.com/community/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

sorry cant do anything for this..

But before you changed moved the mark forums read from the bottom to the top, it only pulled post with new replies. At least that's what I remember.

no idea what to say...

ok here the answer comes!

the "view new posts" displays all teh posts made since your last login. (if you use the remember me feature it will use the time of the moment you entered your password)

if you log out and then back in you will see that there are no results in there. so if you want only the new posts to be displayed you ahve to log out every time.

but honestly i dont understand wehre the problem is. i mean, i see the posts yellow highlited if i didnt read them since my last visit. (in the view new posts list).. only the most recent ones are yellow, so by clicking only them the problem should be solved.. or am i missing osmehting?

I just re-logged in and that helped to clear out the list. Still, it had been working fine with the auto-login this whole time since the new design went up. Not sure what happened there.
