Quote: By Vlad Savov posted May 11th 2011 5:08AM The HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D just got themselves a new buddy in the three-dee picture-taking arena in the shape of Sharp's Aquos Phone SH-12C. We know, that name just rolls off the tongue. What's remarkable about the 12C is that the dual cameras on its back go all the way up to 8 megapixels (to the EVO 3D's 5), which will be creating quite the tasty workload for the 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 chip contained within. A qHD (540 x 960) screen resolution also keeps up with HTC's latest, though the 4.2-inch, 3D-capable display on the Aquos offers more pixel density and less in absolute real estate. Android 2.3, replete with some evident customizations, will serve as the OS, and 720p video recording in 3D will also be available when Sharp launches the 12C in Japan on May 20th. Rest of the world? Well, we can dream about it right now. Impress Watch Sharp (JP) http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/11/shar ... n-gingerb/

Not sillier than other 3D mobiles like the Optimus 3D LG, the Sharp has around 2.75 cm stereobase and the Optimus has only 2.40 cm. Still lower than the Nintendo 3DS with it's approx. 3.4 cm though. I guess there must be a reason why they are so conservatives for the stereo base, it's probably better for short distance subjects.

I did want to get the Sony Bloggie camera, but after finding out the base was 20mm, I had to pass. How hard would it be to make a camera with adjustable stereobase? Maybe not practical for phones, but like for Flip-style pocket cameras.

what's worse is that this problem seems to be more related to simple ignorance about 3d- how much more cost really would it take to increase the stereobase- there is plenty of room on that phone- the second camera could be near where the phone name is printed

I don't think it's ignorance, IIRC someone from Panasonic said that using a 6.5 cm stereobase was not a good choice for consumer cameras because the subjects are generally very close. He advised to use 4.0 cm or less, because when you shoot something close with a 6.5 stereobase it's difficult to fuse the images on a home screen. I guess the same logic was applied to cameras for mobile phones, I would be surprised it would just be ignorance considering the fact that producing a mobile phone requires a lot of talented engineers. That or it's not physically possible to put 2 cameras more spaced than that on a mobile phone.

What would be great is if they could put 3 or 4 lenses, about 25mm apart on the unit. That way you could dynamically switch which cameras to use (based on the distance to the subject). Or even record in all 4 at once and allow you to pick and choose in post.
