Looking for Silex SX-DS-3000WAN / good 5GHz wireless USB

Post by bteitler »

I have a project where I am doing real time motion capture + wireless Oculus Rift for an immersive gaming experience. I prefer rendering on a desktop so I can have complex scenes as well as keep my backpack lightweight, which necessitates wireless video + USB for Oculus Rift. Here's a video of me playing around a bit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtsYgYR680A

In the video, I'm using this product for USB: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058DN1Q4, which is very robust, but only supports 2.4GHz wifi, and I have a lot of sources of interference in the area, so I occasionally have problems. I'm looking to upgrade to a more robust solution that is less prone to interference.

I know there are a few video + USB devices that use 5GHz band, but I haven't had very good luck with them - at least on Windows 7. I actually don't need / want video in the device, because I have rock solid video from the DVDO3: http://www.amazon.com/DVDO-AIR3-1-60GHz ... B00F5LEMBC, which is as far as I can tell, the only 60GHz consumer device on the market. I really wish it supported USB as well...

I have the Silex SX-DS-3000WN, which is a 2.4GHz only USB server, but is a pretty dependable product. As I like it, I've been trying to find the Silex SX-DS-3000WAN version (which is the dual band version) at a reasonable price, but I can't seem to find it anywhere that will ship to the US or isn't marked up ridiculously. It's doubly hard to find, because not only is it no longer manufactured, the two versions seem to confuse re-sellers and they often list the WAN but actually only have the WN. I contacted Silex and they couldn't help me find one. Does anyone here have one they'd be willing to sell me?

I am also looking for suggestions on alternative products, as long as they are robust and relatively lightweight. I need them to be robust at 20 foot range, support Oculus head tracking (i.e. actually correct implement the USB 2.0 spec), and not overheat and degrade after a few minutes. They also need to work on Windows 7 dependably without much hassle. Again, I'm looking for low interference so 2.4GHz products are out.

Here are some products I've tried and the issues I've encountered:

ASUS Wavi (http://www.asus.com/Multimedia/WAVI/): Doesn't seem dependable. Sometimes it will recognize devices, and sometimes it won't, and I can't figure out why. Even if I could get it working, it is a really large form factor, and since I have a better solution for video, it's kind of a waste of space.

Peerless HDSWHDI100 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009HNK272): Can't get anything to connect via USB though video works (with lots of artifacts...). Tried updating drivers with no luck.

Cables Unlimited Display Dock (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003D1CBY6): Instant BSOD.

Thanks in advance!
