UNITY AWARDS 2014 BEST STUDENT PROJECT
The Rift is a game made by 11 french students for our end-studies-project. It will be available for July 2014, but we promise we will give you the protype, alpha and beta game when it will be available.
This game is a 3D Arcade Shoot’em Up. It’s a PC game (obviously) with a Xbox360 controller & an Oculus Rift (you don’t say).
We want the player to feel he is at the command of his own ship.
The game is based on 5 pillars :
- Intuitive flying
- Frenetic shooter
- Eye lock & load mechanic
- Cockpit Management
- Immersion
The game is based on flying but the core gameplay is shooting so we don’t want to challenge the player on flying. As we want to have an easy piloting we made it accessible. We drew our inspiration from the Nintendo 64 game: Starfox.
NERVOUS SHOOTER
The shoot gameplay has to be frenetic to improve the action because it’s the core gameplay. The player has to be snowed under tons of missiles and enemis. We want the player to be aware all the time during the fighting.
EYE LOCK & LOAD
The eye lock & load mechanic refer to the real technology used by pilots in a jet fighter. It’s used to target enemy with an eye tracking technology.
The Oculus Rift allows us to integrate this groundbreaking mechanic. We will ask the player to use their own head to target enemy and shoot.
COCKPIT MANAGEMENT
The cockpit management is a very important and most unique feature because you can’t do it without an Oculus rift. Thanks to the rotations captors of the Oculus, the player can look inside the cockpit in a blink of an eye to have access to all information or use mechanisms inside the cockpit.
IMMERSION
Thanks to the Oculus Rift, the player will be in a total immersion in the aircraft. The 3D effect is a key to the immersion. Besides, the isolation from the rest of the world will be very strong.

The game is called The Rift because some actions will take place inside a canyon, called The Styx. The Styx is like a Rift into the earth.
Our artist made an awesome artwork of the cockpit. It's very important, because it is where the player is !
The player will face lot's of enemies during his journey.
