Rift Lens Mod - 5x Loupe holders

Post by bobjwatts »

I have modeled some holders that fit the Rift for the old 5x Loupe lenses we were using for the DIY Rifts. They have worked out pretty well and for any modders out there with access to a 3D printer should give it a go.

Because the lenses don't fit when positioned centre I have had to offset them, and with the clips it has meant that I have had to make a left and a right model. Once printed the loupes clip right in and you clip then into the Rift just like the original lenses.

The main thing that drove me to try it out is that my IPD must be slightly too narrow for the Rift and so I would always get a slight bit of distortion, I also noticed that the tolerance for getting it into the exact position was high, the loupes a far easier on the eye and have a far greater tolerance for looking around and positioning on the face.

Pros:
Increased tolerance for distortion
Improved screen door

Cons:
Incorrect warping
Less room for nose

On days like this, I REALLY wish I owned a 3D printer.

Maybe Santa will bring me one if I'm good this year.

Great work bobjwatts!

I have some of those lenses and I'm curious how this will look.

Cool. If you run the Oculus Tuscany demo, it has grid displays and keyboard commands to manually modify distortion coefficients so you can play with the distortion and hopefully generate a more pleasant image. I suspect you will may also have to modify the LensSeparation constant that is used to modify the center of projection. Unfortunately there is no good way to "implant" these new values into precompiled content but you can get Tuscany running pretty well.

I've used credit card sized fresnel lenses placed on top of the 5x pocket loupe lenses. The increased magnification hides the screen divider better. Also the focal length is reduced, so the lenses can be placed closer to the screen.

The warping is too much for me though, and the image much more cloudy or foggy. Contrast is also negatively affected.
