Sadly Mon Calamari will only be able to enjoy the Rift with a healthy dose of self-deception.

LOL,
I'd love to see TRON2.0 on Rift, but I doubt anyone will ever fix the drivers for that game... (or will they...)

I have seen some sites claiming it will support 9DOF (even on this very board), and other saying 6DOF. I understand what 6DOF gives you, but i wasn't sure what 9DOF was, which is why i left that out of the pic. Is the 9DOF claim just an exaggeration by some overzealous folks?

They have three ways of measuring 3DOF, which they call 9DOF because everyone else does it too. They don't want Rift to sound inferior to other products.

All IMUs are only 3 DOF (pitch, yaw, roll). 6 and 9 DOF is the trend used to describe how many sensors are in the IMU. Adding a gyroscope gets you 6 DOF, and a magnetometer makes it 9 DOF.

The Rift isn't an IMU though, so we really can't call it 9DOF like IMU vendors dishonestly do. It is currently 3DOF, as far as we know, but we'd all like it to be the maximum 6DOF that reality allows for a single rigid body.

Following the trend, they even have 10 DOF sensors now! I've seen some now with barometric altimeters in them. Hell why don't we just throw a thermometer and a photodetector on there and we'll have an even 12 DOF!

The Rift uses an IMU for its tracking. I don't really understand how you can equate DOF with the Rift itself unless you're talking about its tracker.

I'm flattered my 'shop was chosen for the news page, but it was "mindless" who started the thread, not me!

EDIT: news article has been fixed :)
I intend to make a few more of these, they're just too fun. Also, I'm really impressed with some people's arty abilities - I was expecting more along the lines of "programmer art" :D

The credit was fixed in the story. Please remember to upload the to gallery in the special album created (detailed in the article linked above). You can use that as graphics source material for your forum posts as well.

Do you also want us to upload videos to this album (I've already posted one to this thread), or just leave them hosted on YouTube?

p.s. Thanks for fixing the credit

Videos are best handled through YouTube. It's just the images that are important. It often happens that people use temporary image sites, and before you know it, you've got posts with missing pictures, etc. I just want to make sure the hard work stands the tests of time! It's also easier for people to refer to and judge.

No need to upload to the forum. Just upload to the gallery, and use that as your image source in the forum.

Neil

Hi Guys,

I think I solved an access problem with the gallery that was preventing uploads. Please give it a try to make sure it works!

Thanks in advance,
Neil

P.S. I wish this thread started earlier. It would have been great presentation material!!!

A simulated ad for the consumer Rift :o I imagine a much more professional version made, and it makes my mouth water... or is it too cheezy? Haha. Kind of makes me think of old graphics-card or 3D-application ads.
