Don't know if you guys caught the SIGGRAPH video interview, but looks like an old VFX1 kind of demo unit with the RIFT built in:

Wondering if this is Oculus' path to routing the awkward cabling (i.e. straight up over your head) to counteract weird tension issues with the cables sticking out of the sides. If that's not too heavy, having built in earphones is a nice plus!
EDIT: If you then wanted to separate the headset from the computer, you could build an outboard belt/waist unit for battery/wifi/video with a short cable down your back from the headset to avoid adding all of that weight to the headset, but stopping the umbilical tether to your PC.

I've read several places that the final result will just be the goggles with a strap of sorts, and from the render it looks like the cord will be attached to the strap on the side of your head, and will be apparently adjustable so the cords could come out from behind your head.
