I calculated the width at 144mm, or 5.6" with, so well, you figure it out. :)

how big is a 7" tablet screen in width and height?

Depends on the aspect ratio, of course. If it's 16:10, then width is 5.94 and height is 3.71.

With 5.6'' width, aspect ratio would have to be 4:3 display for it to be 7'' display.

Have a look here, very simple form to calculate the dimensions for you:

Came across a quite nice article over at Edge Online, take a gander. It is mainly about which developers will/might/can make the Rift a possible success.

I'm expecting an Oculus Kickstarter-update any day now, but I'm dying for some news!

Trivial stuff like what the dev-kit will look like (same as the prototype? or more like the design mock-up?)
Even if they are still struggling with some things... I'd be happy to know and perhaps give my input.
Likewise I appreciate the replies and minor-announcements from Dycus and PalmerTech in this forum.

I've backed a few other projects and a large part of the fun in backing is being involved in the process of development. There are some projects with over 40 updates and each has some personal experiences from the team, small design decisions they would like to show the backers, get feedback and get people involved. I really enjoyed these updates from the process with weekly blogs, seeing how they progressed and it helped with expectation management of their backers.

I get the feeling there is still some flux as to final component choices as the reason for the limited updates. This is not a bad thing as we know we have had upgrades already from the initial outlines.

Ture, but any crowd sourced project is going to be poked for maximum level of transparency and with the amount of hype surrounding the Rift its a no brainer. But I get it and I have to argue to myself everyday:

Still... the proles grow restless.

There should at least be an update when they ship the November kits.

Yeah, I'm fine with the lack of hardware specs - but shipping estimates would be nice.

Are the November kits still going to happen? Since it seems the design is now more of an integrated system, the 100 kits might be a distraction. I could see Oculus contacting those folks, waiving off the DIY kits, and giving them some consolation reward in addition to the first dev kits to ship.

Note, this is pure speculation on my part.

My understanding was that the assembly kits were just going to be the parts list that they were using to make the real units. So essentially, as soon as they receive all the parts they can just ship them out to those 100 people. I would think the only additional trouble would be the assembly manual, but they probably already had to make a training manual for the assembly staff anyway.

I believe the preassembly units were still going to be foam core units (hence the need for glur gun, etc) - however Palmer mentioned that the assembled shell would be avalaible to the DIY assembly units down the road. Hopefully this has changed when Palmer gives us a status update!

Has anyone seen the new in-game footage added to the Oculus video commercial?

What game is that. Hawken?

I'm pretty sure it's not Hawken.
My guess would be either an Unreal or Unity engine integration demo.

I almost looks like that is the demo that comes with the doanload of the Unreal Devolpment Kit?

The tracking also doesn't look 1:1.

I wish I would have gotten in on the kickstarter, but I'm gonna be waiting until Jan... I suppose that's okay, while I wait for some actual software to get pushed out though.

In the meantime... anyone want to take a guess at the final screen size? :)

I'm starting to suspect that the surprise is pass through cameras. That would be obvious from the shape of the shell. I can't think of any other improvements that would mean they couldn't show the design...

That is very possible now that they are developing a proper housing....

These secrets are really tantalizing. What could be given away by the housing design?

Not resolution, not tracking. Integral headphones? Probably not.

Other than the addition of a camera, I can't really think of anything. I guess a camera could allow two things (1) pass through video to prevent RL blindness (2) position tracking if they can get tracking by Optical Flow figured out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_flow

I guess it could also be optical adjustment such as IPD adjustment and focus for people that wear glasses, which is less exciting to me.

from Kickstarter Update - "trying to squeeze in a few key features without delaying, but time is against us. We want to nail down every last detail before announcing anything.
We can’t show any of the SLAs quite yet (they’d give away a few secrets), but here’s a sample of our progress..."

now that they have a 3d Stereolithography machine, they can even prototype custom lenses, to best pair the new screen, thus expanding horizontal FOV in the 100° and maybe beyond!

Hello,

i ordered the kickstarter oculus rift developer kit, and i'm a

a big fan of VR for several years now ( I'm with 3d since 1999 )

I own i-glasses and z800 with 800 x 600.

with z800 and a FOV of 40° i notice every pixel ... so i'm sure the oculus rift pixel will be much larger than those of the Z800...

am i right ?

the z800 has a very bad contrast ratio - will oculus rift be better than z800 ?

but i also hope that with doom3 bfg with this low resolution textures will be a wonderfully experience with oculus rift ....

FR3D
best regards FR3D
