Cymatic Bruce Gives Besr ocuslus Rift Review Videos
this guy basically takes us on an emotional aspect journey with the rift...how things feel to him in the oculus perception as he fine tunes and creates his version of the star trek holodeck complete with hydra arm controls
he does a weekly journal and its really cool to watch his progress on his oculus rift adventure

Re: Cymatic Bruce Gives Besr ocuslus Rift Review Videos
Great video! It was really interesting how weirded out he got when he was too close the NPC, I wonder if this sort of reaction will be universal? I also wonder if the appeal of just walking around and exploring a new environment (something I don't tend to do for very long in an FPS) will become lessened as the novelty of VR wears off. I hope not.
Currently working on Flagship - a first-person RTS for the Oculus Rift.

Just tried it! It ups the immersion a bit, because you have almost nothing in the real world touching you. Your feet are on the ground, every now an then a wire brushes against your body, but otherwise it is much easier to sink into the space. I also had the urge to walk. It is at once more thrilling and more terrifying than sitting down.3dvison wrote:Cymatic, have you used the Rift standing up yet ? Would like to hear your thoughts on that.

I *LOVE* the Rift-compatible stereoscopic desktop wallpaper idea! Thanks!
And thanks for the "look up/down/left/right" reminder. I keep forgetting to do that. Nice VR induction habit to acquire.
There are probably other "set and setting" techniques yet to be documented, that will make VR (especially in the Rift) able to achieve a broader audience without risk of getting put in storage before users get their "sea legs" in VR.

Awesome! A SBS 3d wallpaper makes the transition between programs less jarring for sure.
I totally agree on the 'set and settings' standards. As we learn and share more of these types of techniques, we maximize the potential for positive VR experiences.

How long before we get to walk in your Holodeck? As soon as the demo scene fires up, I'd hate to see it lost in whirlwind of things I gotta try -vs- things I have time to try. I am sure it will hit big when it does (the onslaught of small, test pattern demos). Get in while the gettin's good is my motto! But seriously, luv to try it it out. My fav SNG episodes involve the holodeck, and Mr. Moriarty... I think of him often:)

Its hard to say! I have a solid idea of what I want to do, but things are not moving as fast as I would like (when does it ever in game development?). UDK is one tough cookie for me at the moment. I am going to try my best to have at least a concept and basic functionality before summer.lnrrgb wrote:How long before we get to walk in your Holodeck? Re: Cymatic Bruce Gives Besr ocuslus Rift Review Videos
I posted this on the Oculus Dev forums, but I will post it here too:
Regular Video Series with Tips, Reviews, and Requests
Hey VR Heads!
I received my dev kit earlier this week, and in my excitement have been posting videos with first impressions, useful tips, and reviews/trials of various software. I have also begun fulfilling requests from the community. You can find them on my YouTube channel here:
Cymatic Bruce on YouTube
After receiving much positive feedback on the videos I have posted so far, I have decided to move forward with making bi-weekly video releases about the Rift. I will try this "VR Video Blogger" thing on for size.
For those of you out there still waiting for your dev kit and have burning questions, or would like me to try something specific, please let me know. I am also open to collaboration/testing - I have already started this with a few devs to very positive results.
I realize that by committing to this, pretty much all my spare time outside of work will be dedicated to VR. I am okay with this. If there is a way I can help the community be more prepared to make awesome VR experiences, I want to do it!
Yours in Innovation,

Hi Bruce,
great blog.
I have to get a pair of muppet eyes too. Fortunately(?) my Rift is a few weeks away yet so I have the time to get them.
My request, could you try and do the hydra-on-head-for-position-tracking thing? I would love to hear if you feel it works good?
(really)
Cheers

Here's another suggestion Bruce,
Half-Life 2 VR mod with independant weapon tracking:

And the MTBS thread about it:

I'll be expecting a video later tonight.

Thanks Cymatic Bruce! These vids are making the wait so much easier. Finally a level headed intelligent person talking about the RIFT.
The tips are great, I'm excited that my experience is going to be that much better now... I backed on the 3rd day of kickstarter, so hoping to have it soon!
I'm also really looking forward to your holodeck demo! You will be releasing it for us right?
Thanks again, I apperciate the time your dedicating.

I have a request... Doom 3 BFG edition. It only sort-of works, because I don't have a Rift yet for testing, and I'm not sure how to modify the shaders, but someone posted some settings that seem to work.

Some great videos, Cymatic! You're getting me even more excited for when my Rift will arrive... Just watched your Tuscany video. Probably the first thing I'm going to do in the demo is start throwing chairs/barrels... When I first saw that demo in another video, the first thing I thought was "Throw the chair! Throw the chair!"
Anyway, subscribed! Looking forward to even more vids (though I'm not done watching through your previous ones yet ).
