If people are offended, just respect that and move on. I will repeat on more time it was just a joke/play on words. It was not intended to hurt anyone.

This discussion has already hit a dead end. Lets stick to the topic from now on.
Everybody has gotten the message, and the word has been removed from the thread.
Stop bringing it up from any point of view.

What if we split the difference, spin it positive and call it "mentally rifted".

Notch may have started it, but you turned it into a meme - I think that means you get to name it?

Thanks!

For it to be a true Internet meme it must be freed from its creator and take on a life of its own.

(Although I did give it a file name of RiftAwe, and according to the Internet Convention of 1949 that makes the name a prime candidate. At least no one suggested Riftse! )

Surprised no one mentioned Grifters, as VR seems naturally suited to be the ultimate con. Doesn't the dropped jaw stare go hand in hand with the moment of realization of just how deeply the mark was played?

Retarded is a name for a group of people who do not want to be called that.

If they find the name offensive, why do you insist on using it?

If you call someone else that name, especially when referring to things not necessarily associated with the literal term mentally retarded, but rather cultural associations that are negative, like being involuntarily slack-jawed, it's insulting to all mentally handicapped people.

It's like any slur.

Oh we all know when I say he jewed me out of a dollar, I didn't mean it in a racist way.
...
I don't mean to fight you, but to persuade you.

The Hitler thing is different. Someone seeing something you did not put into an icon is different than outright using a slur. The Hitler icon thing is silly.

And I still like Oculust, though it refers to the company and not the product.
"Retarded" is a scientific term meaning "delayed", as in "developmentally retarded". It *was* a politically correct accurate scientific replacement for previously common "village idiot".

I worked professionally with retarded adults. They were called retarded by the documentation, and the professional staff, and even by themselves usually with a grin. We usually truncated that into a humorous word 'tards...

You have a LOT more people to persuade than me. There are all the scientific and professional books a trade journals. Retarded accurately describes their CONDITION. It is not just some made up name that is meant to be pejorative name-calling or bullying. It is just a scientific name used professionally to describe their condition.

Using the humorous term Riftard just denotes people acting silly as though they are ALSO developmentally retarded, in no way referring to or demeaning OTHERS who have that condition.

I suppose we should call black licorice something else because "black" is demeaning to people of African descent? I do not think so...

Why do words that contain "tard" bother you so much. Are you going to make the Doctor Who people rename their TARDis?

And the "Hitler thing" actually can offend people MUCH more than words that contain "tard", especially if they were ever in a concentration camp. However, here, there was not intended reference to Hitler, but rather just a false sense of oversensitivity by those who imagined Hitler hiding in a couple of pixels.

And although "Oculust" is clever, lust itself is not generally a good thing, and considered one of the seven deadly sins by a large portion of the population of the planet.

So I guess we will just have to disagree about WHICH words and ideas are silly, and which should be avoided. I like words that contain TARD. And Riftard is clever and memorable and rolls off the tongue easily. But "RiftAwe" is just RiftAwfully lame and forgettable...

1st) Obviously people using the Rift should be called Cowboys. Image
I know in the Roman 'cowboys' is used like 'VR-Hackers' but I'd prefer this term anyway.

3 to 5 degrees counterclockwise. Closer to 3.

More shadow, light further back, just a hair. Sharper shadow. More contrasted in the shadow.

I reported you to local police for hate speech. They have this "If you see something, say something" type of program going on. /s
When will people get that force decides what is right and what is wrong. Democracy doesn't exist, it's not possible.

One will say something is offensive, another will say it isn't, I will say I believe it is/isn't. In the end, none of that matters.
