Low field of view HMDs with no head tracking cannot really be called "Virtual Reality".

Even book can be called virtual reality under certain conditions ;) I dont know how much field of view or tracking has to do with it!

Well, my view of virtuality may be slightly biased... Point being that wasn't so fair comment :)

I tend to take a liberal approach to what "Virtual Reality" means. Even the telephone can be considered a basic type of VR.

But, at the same time, I can agree that the specs on this headset are not very enticing. The price isn't horrible, but I don't think I would buy one.

Quick spec comparison :

MartianVision Martian Goggles :
- FOV : 32° diagonal
- resolution : 720x526 per eye
- head-tracking : no
- price : $299.99

Oculus Rift :
- FOV : 90° diagonal
- resolution : 640x800 per eye
- head-tracking : 3dof (rotation)
- price : $300

Hmm, I think I'll pass...

ancjob, is that you?

If you think those glasses are good the Rift is going to destroy your mind (In a good way). Also, # tags don't work on MTBS.

@bobv5: Yeah, thinking the same thing.

Anyway, though, the Rift is still not good for all markets. For example, watching videos on the go. There is still a place for other styles of HMDs.

@cyberreality-- Exactly bro!!

@fredz -- your're kinda right.. I guess both titles work... All I Play is call of duty though bro so for first person shooters... i swear it feels like Virtual Reality... yea I looked up the rift and it does look to be pretty cool... but we all know about electronics and due dates.. Plus developers of games will have to get used to the new software and so forth... you know...

I agree with you all to some extent.. All Im saying is I took a chance with these Martian Goggles and now Im thinkin if these are that cool .. then they're tablets gotta be awesome too!!... hells to the yess bros!!!

This thing is just a generic rebranded product from China. Its not something made by digitalmartians.

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/68162 ... _16_9.html

Exactly the same product. 4GB internal memory yada yada.

Btw, they just about doubled the price on it. The pads too, you can get that 750 dollar projection pad for 350 dollars.

They even use the exact same pictures on their rebranded stuff.

They don't look TOO bad for cheap stuff, but I can't really see any actual specs. I'm looking at the 98" one's page, does anyone have any real specs? Where did you get the 32 degree FOV info FredZ?
If the '98"' ones had a greater FOV than say, 50 degrees, they might be worth a look for some people.

854*480 it claims which is pretty crap, but would be ok for FPV etc...

WiredEarp, yes they are OK. Totally agree on that. 300 dollars is too expensive tho.

I am not saying it's a bad product, at a 150 dollar price point. It's just not for Virtual Reality. It's not the salvation for the VR community MarshawnMan presented it like.
Everybody here knows how superior Oculus Rift is, no point in getting into arguing semantics about the definition of VR.
Just does not come off right when you just registered on a forum to hype a product into something it is not, and in addition try to downplay and bash the much superior Oculus Rift.

And that's the dev kit that is shipping in March, not the consumer version shipping in the future.
Listen to reason, and read more about Oculus Rift.

I got that from the Google cache of the Super 3d Martian Goggles which were at $619. Not the same model but since they were twice the price I guess the FOV can't be better on the cheaper model. And with such a design I think it's not possible to have a higher FOV.
WiredEarp wrote:854*480 it claims which is pretty crap, but would be ok for FPV etc...
That's the supported input resolution for movies I guess, the native resolution is 720x526.

To me it looks like someone working for this company, his language is so weird it looks suspicious to me. And that's often the tactic vendors use here, many posts in several threads about one single product and an account created specifically for that. Next we'll see fake accounts telling us how these glasses are the best thing on earth, TOYin3D style.

If its the company that is behind this, I guess it backfired badly since I linked to an identical product at half the price. I will keep doing it , (if there are more accounts created for this single purpose) because I know the source of almost every product on that page, and almost every product is at double the price.

Oh, I agree, a first post talking about new VR headsets that no-one else has heard of up to now raised my suspicions as well.

However, since they have several different models, I'd still like to see some REAL specs (especially on the claimed 98" version), since what they have on the site is totally misleading (and I dont really believe the 'testimonial' comments posted by 'users'). I WANT TO SEE FOV IN DEGREES.

However, for those who want/need to display 2D imagery, or just play normal 3D games, they might be ok, especially since the Z800 is pretty much unavailable nowadays, and most of the Vuzix stuff is crap. Also the form factor looks ok for things such as FPV. I think these are more competing with Vuzix than any true VR display like the Rift. That said, I'd never buy one until I'd heard at least a couple of independent reviews...

@ Namielus: GREAT move. That will discourage people hawking their companies wares, AND provide a cheaper source for those who do actually wish to buy the product (but not get ripped off).

The 98" version is this product
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/69468 ... price.html

Its 98" at 2 meters, meaning a FOV of roughly 56 degrees.

Found these ones which look to be exactly the same model : http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Eyewear- ... B0080UVHJU

I found these specs in the unreadable 10-lines-block product description : Resolution: RM/RMVB below 720*576; AVI below 800*480; LCD 432*240 USB interface

So basically they lied about the specs and the resolution is only 432*240. The 720*576 and 800*480 resolutions are the maximum resolutions for the movies that can be played on them.

So, basically, these glasses are garbage and not even worth half their current price.

The product might be worse than what they claim on alibaba, but its certainly not better. But that just proves my point that these are not quality products - and worth half those prices or even less in some cases.
I have tried some of those things, and its not very good.

Thanks Namielus, interesting if it DOES have a 56 degree FOV. That would make it good for semi immersive FPV.

That said, I wouldn't buy any of these without more reviews, and I have 2 Rifts coming, so it will not be something I'd invest in at this point...

and now watch the video presentation of the thing :

What are the 2 only games showed in the video ?
What a coincidence ! Dooopeeeeee ! lol !

I originally ignored this thread after reading the first post, but noticing that it now was on page 3, I just had to see what was going on here. At first, the OP made me want to bash my own head in, but reading all the responses were good for a few laughs. I guess it was worth it.

Anyway, I checked out the horrendous "DigitalMartian" site, and it made me sad. Just a (WAY) over-priced store front pushing cheap chinese wares. I mean, "MartianPad2" 7" craplet for $725.99??!?! Seriously?!?! I'LL TAKE TWO!! Not.

I hope the OP has better luck finding suckers elsewhere, because it's not going to happen here.

I actually hope the guy looses a lot of money, but it's more then likely he'll catch enough suckers to make it worth his while. Let's face it, If he buys 10, at that price he only has to sell three and he's made a profit.

Yep, scam confirmed, at least with enough info for me. Both Jay Connor (the uploader of the vid to youtube) and Jeremy Jenkins are the same person IMHO, which means, since Jeremy Jenkins is also posting on the page, saying how great they are, and how much he trusts digitalmartians goggles, that he is just trying to scam people. That also makes me think that MarshawnMan is the same person.

How do I know they are the same person? Simple, they have almost exactly the same taste in music according to their youtube likes - 50 Cent and Christian music.

Not sure how Christian it is to go about trying to drum up business under false pretences, but thats how I call it.
