OK, was reviewing this online I am now super pumped about this - Kinect Star Wars (comes out next week) apparently has 3d support... I am giddy about the thought of 3d, Kinect gaming (no controller) all on the enjoyment of the HMZ.... mmmmmm!!!!

I don't know. Sounds great in theory, but the implementation seems downright boring. An on-rails game - seriously? It just feels like a lot of game developers are being lazy with their Kinect integration. I mean you can basically directly map any body motion now in game, but they are still just using really simple gestures and not even a hint of simulated walking. Maybe they are just dumbing it down so it can be ported to Wii and Move, but jeez - why even call it Star Wars Kinect then?

I am simply stating that with 3d support, might be a nice way to try out potential kinect supported 3d titles... as I believe this is the first one...

Microsoft should really step it up with their game support for the Kinect. I mean other than the "dancing" game there really isn't anything yet that showcases this technology. The game studios all want to support multiple platforms, so they end up dumbing down the interface. Microsoft has the money and the incentive to create really unique and dedicated Kinect titles - killer-apps that work uniquely well with the Kinect and not with other systems. I can't imagine why they don't try harder ?

I believe Kinect games need to be dumb down due to Kinect is not too accurate in predicting the joint movement and delay issue. It would be very frustrating if all the right motion is not register correctly and failed the game. If Microsoft can improve these 2 issues, then it would be a killer device for next generation gaming.

Well I've seen some fairly impressive body tracking done with the Kinect sensor. See video below. Now this isn't actually the XBox running the computations, but it gives you an idea of what is possible with the current Kinect sensor package.

In my opinion, this is accurate enough to do direct body mapping into a game. Certainly much better than the clumsy gestures that many games currently implement.

I had tried OpenNI skeleton mapping and sometimes, the joint detection just incorrect. It'll just jump for split second and snap back again. Detection of height so far is not an issue but complex motion might trip the sensor occasionally.

A PC game that utilizes this would be a real killer, a console just dont have the computing power to real time compute the data stream from kinect. However you would probably need a 6 or 8 core CPU to get it smooth :D (Or if they utilize the GPU todo the computing)

edit: Why didnt they put a dedicated CPU in the kinect, stupid..

So either they put a specialized Kinect CPU in the XBox 720 and use it sell more XBox 720's for enhanced motion support

or

they include a dedicated CPU inside the Kinect 2 and then have enhanced motion support and backwards compatibility with the XBox 360

Option 2 would be best for gamers and hardware geeks - but Microsoft is going to choose whichever option makes more $$$ and better fits their XBox and Windows 8 strategies.

Personally, I really like the way that Microsoft is operating these days. Gone are the days when they just seemed to be playing "defense". Well they are still engaged in "market holding", strategies but at least it feels like their newest product offerings are inspired and innovative (Kinect/Windows 8) instead of just derivative and stifling (IE, J++, .NET, Bing, ...) And yes, I am one that thinks Windows 8 is going to crush Android. It will be Windows vs Linux all over again.

It will be Windows vs Linux all over again.
Except that Windows was the established one, Linux the upstart, which is the exact opposite of the current Windows Phone vs Android match up.

ok, maybe Windows versus Netscape is the more apt analogy...

I said Linux because it was another open-source OS that they bested. Microsoft has the technological leverage, the business relationships, and software catalog to dominate in this area.

Ah, but does that mean that android would then be open sourced, and make a comeback under a different name, like Netscape became Firefox? ;-)

It will be interesting anyway. Have heard good things about Windows Phone (and the one I played with was quite nice as well), but they'd have to be significantly better for me to go to a more closed platform.

As a consumer I think it will be huge selling point to have a seamless integration across multiple devices. And as a Windows developer, it will be very comfortable to port and develop software in such a familiar environment.

Well I think the video pretty much speaks for itself. I don't think there's anything left to say about this game (or the Star Wars franchise for that matter) :(

Edit: Sorry, can't resist. This is just comedy gold...

I’m Han Solo Dance Lyrics

I’m feeling like a star,
You can’t stop my shine
I’m lovin’ Cloud City,
My head’s in the sky

I’m Solo, I’m Han Solo,
I’m Han Solo.
I’m Han Solo. Solo.

Yeah, I’m feelin’ good tonight,
Finally feeling free and it feels so right, oh.
Time to do the things I like,
Gonna see a Princess, everything’s all right, oh.

No Jabba to answer to,
Ain’t a fixture in the palace zoo, no.
And since that carbonite’s off me
I’m livin’ life now that I’m free, yeah.

Told me to get myself together
Now I got myself together, yeah.
Now I made it through the weather,
Better days are gonna get better.

I’m so happy the carbonite is gone.
I’m movin’ on.
I’m so happy that it’s over now.
The pain is gone.

I’m putting on my shades
To cover up my eyes
I’m jumpin’ in my ride,
I’m heading out tonight

I’m Solo, I’m Han Solo,
I’m Han Solo.
I’m Han Solo. Solo.

I’m picking up my blaster,
Put it on my side.
I’m jumpin’ in my Falcon
Wookie at my side.

I’m solo, I’m Han Solo,
I’m Han Solo.
I’m Han Solo. Solo.

LOL Brantlew, that was gold.

Han would have not just shot first, but shot EVERYONE responsible for such a travesty.

I think it's funny. Obviously filed in Infinities. What do you think of Tag and Bink and the Star Wars Tales parodies? Those've been going on a long time. They're Infinities, so the canon isn't affected. What about Robot Chicken? Star Wars already had silliness in 1978, with the Holiday Special.
