hi all,

Version swapping:
Sometimes we need to downgrade to a previous version of something in order to get something to work right like it used to before the upgrade. For example, I've heard that the Tridef profile for "Grand Theft Auto 4" works with Tridef software package 4.1 but not 4.1.3. The Tridef FAQ describes upgrading but not downgrading...

The question is whether to uninstall then install, or just to install the old version without uninstalling the current newer version. It seems to make more sense to uninstall first. This is what I've tried and it works fine except that after you install the older version, you need to use the same activation code that you used before so just make sure that you have that info handy. Also don't confuse the "trial" activation code with the paid license activation code. I actually don't know if that will cause any problems but you probably want to avoid it. Maybe you can get away with installing the older version "on top" of the newer one but I don't advise it. Also, I would use the uninstall Tridef function in the Start menu instead of the "Add or Remove Programs" option in the Windows Control Panel although they probably do the same thing.

The update function in the Tridef submenu in the Window's Start menu doesn't really do the update. It just checks for the presence of an update on the web and opens a convenient window to download it. In order to do the actual update, unzip and run the exe. You don't need to uninstall the current version and you don't need to re-enter any activation codes. Just run the new one and it should be fine.

A note about profiles:
After I downgraded, then upgraded, I still had my Tridef profiles that I had made before so it looks like those don't get deleted during an uninstall. That's good although, just to be safe, you may want to make a backup of your profiles found under:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DDD\TriDefGames

The reason I downgraded was just to see if "Starwars the Force Unleashed" would work with the older version. It didn't but after I upgraded to Ignition 2.5 (inside Tridef 4.2), then it did work since they added a profile for it. It's a Steam profile and my version is non-Steam but it works when I drag my desktop icon in and select the SW-TFU profile. If you have the non-Steam version, you can delete the command line option -applaunch #### but it still seems to work fine with or without it. Hurray.

Currently, I don't really know of any games that you need to downgrade your Tridef 4.2 driver for. Please post if you find some. If we get a long list, it may warrant a new thread.

Anyway, happy version-swapping,

Hi all,

Recently, since the new 4.2.1 drivers came out, I've noticed that some games (actually, only X-blades so far) work better with the old 4.1.3 drivers requiring a downgrade to test it. This time I tried the "install old over new" driver change method and I just want to tell you that it doesn't work. So installing new drivers over old ones works but old over new refuses. I'm just letting you know, if f you want to do a downgrade, you have to uninstall, install and activate with your paid-for activation code. That's all.

Arrrrrrghhhh! So much driver swapping, with old-school nvidia and now iZ3D and Tridef.

It's not so bad if you only need it once in a while but I was hoping to need to do it less than before. I'll post more details about my experiences with various games but now-a-days I'm testing with iZ3D mostly. Eventually, I'll switch to testing games with TriDef and make some game profiles too.
