HDMI 1.4 3D at 1080P only works on 24Hz and otehr issues

Post by ViruzZ »

Hi,
I own Samsung 46C7000, ATI HD5850, and retail version of DDD.

I use AMD/HDMI1.4a 3D mode and it looks AWESOME, but i have 2 serious issues.

1. When I choose 1080P resolution it always plays at 1080P/24Hz, even if i choose 3D Stereo force 60Hz in DDD settings.

2.I can only play at 720P/60Hz or 180P/24Hz if i choose any other resolution i get a black screen.

In other 3D modes, Like Checkerboard and Side by Side, i can choose ANY resolution, up to 1080P/60Hz and it play fine, BUT the 3D effect is much worse then "HDMI 1.4" 3D mode.

Can you please tell me how to force 1080P/60Hz?
Or maybe i can't use it because ATI 5850 is only HDMI 1.3 so there is not enough bandwidth? So if i update my GPU to ATI 6950 it will work?

Thanks you...

Are you gaming on an HDTV?

The 1920X1080P (24Hz) and 1280X720P (50/60Hz) is a limitation of HDMI 1.4. HDMI 1.4A has a better spec, but it is not fully supported yet. However, you can set your driver to side by side mode (half width per eye, full frame) and game at 1920X1080P at 60Hz. The loss in resolution isn't that noticeable. You will need to manually set your TV to read side by side mode.

Yes, im gaming on Samsung 46C7000 LED.

So the limitation is in the 3D part of HDMI 1.4? because the TV works fine in 1080P 60HZ in other 3D modes.

The reason I want to use HDMI mode and not side by side, because i tested all these modes and there is a clear difference in 3D quality.
Theoretically there should be none, but in HDMI 1.4 mode the 3D effect is much more '3D'

In DDD Side by Side its the one called Side by Side parallel?

Which one is better: Checkerboard, Side By Side or Line interleaved (my Tv supports all of them)

I would recommend side by side. Make sure the images aren't reversed because that might be what is happening. If you read the above guide. you should be able to tell easily.

Yes, this is a limitation of HDMI 1.4's available 3D modes. The half-width side by side mode gets around this problem because it is rendering through a 2D display path, but is giving up some resolution benefits.

I did some testing and side by side 1080P looks much better, almost no aliasing
I dont understand why but the side by side half resolution (960x1080) (1MP) looks much better then 1280x720 (0.9MP)
But both have almost same amount of pixels.

Maybe there is some scaling going on that makes the pixels look out of whack in that aspect ratio or on the display.

Sorry, let me rephrase

I dont understand why but the side by side 1920x1080 ( actual resolution 960x1080) (1MP) looks much better then HDMI 1.4 Mode Full Resolution 1280x720 (0.9MP)

Ok. In the case of 1920X1080P, you are correct - it's 980 pixels horizontal each side. However, when the TV receives 980X1080, it uses an internal mechanism to stretch the image to a full 1920 X 1080P. There are some minor artifacts from this stretching technique, but they are minor.

By doing it this way, you get the benefit of more screen space to work with (space for your HUD, character elements, etc.) versus a cramped 1280X720.

Neil
