Meant to be Seen's Official Guides List

So!  You want to take the plunge into stereoscopic 3D gaming, and don't know what to do.  Or, you just bought yourself your first stereoscopic 3D system, and don't have the foggiest on how to use it.  RELAX!  You came to the right place!  Beginner or advanced, the following guides will answer most of your questions.  If you are a talented writer and have something more to share, please let us know so we can add your submission(s) to our guides library.

General Guides

MTBS' 3D Buyers Guide For First Time Shoppers!

Neil Schneider, Tuo-Te, Andrew Swartz

Whether you are shopping for a 3D HDTV or a PC display solution, watching these videos is an absolute MUST.  Learn what you need, how to save money when shopping, and the big mistakes to avoid.  These guides are most helpful to consumers interested in gaming in stereoscopic 3D on console and PC.  Happy shopping!

The History of Stereoscopic 3D Gaming

3D Space Invader

While stereoscopic 3D gaming has only now been hitting the headlines, it has been around for well over ten years (twenty in some cases)!  S-3D gaming is a very exciting industry filled with innovation, politics, and controversy!  Through a series of ten minute videos, Neil Schneider, President of Meant to be Seen and Executive Director of the non-profit S-3D Gaming Alliance, gives an up close and personal tour of how our industry came to be, its remaining challenges, and the ramifications moving forward.

An added bonus is all the videos are available in stereoscopic 3D and will work on most S-3D hardware solutions (e.g. Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision, iZ3D, etc.).

Stereoscopic 3D Hardware

3D HDTV
Zalman Monitor Vuzix HMD

We live in a wonderful world of choice and diversity in stereoscopic 3D gaming.  This guide will give you a clear understanding of the dominant technologies on the market, how they work, and what their intrinsic advantages are from one solution to the next.  While you will not find hardware reviews here, you will get enough information to make informed decisions about the technology that is best suited to your needs.

Stereoscopic 3D Settings Guide

Game in 3D

The Stereoscopic 3D Map

After you buy your first stereoscopic 3D solution, read this guide to avoid hours of frustration.  It will teach you everything you need to know about finding the best visual settings for your video games, and understanding how the stereoscopic 3D experience works.  Understand this, and you will understand EVERYTHING!

9 Shameful Sins of Hardware Review Journalism

One of our more controversial guides, this focuses on recognizing S-3D hardware reviews that are written well, and those that aren't.  Stereoscopic 3D gaming is a long term investment, and it's important that our industry's most influential journalists have your interests at heart.  While the media has grown a lot sharper and more informed since this guide was written, it's always important to keep a watchful eye!

MTBS' 3D Game Analyzer

M3GA Logo

It's great to see companies like DDD, iZ3D, and NVIDIA promoting compatibility with hundreds of games.  Unfortunately, there is little consistency between driver developers on what is considered 3D compatible.  This is a consumer driven database of stereoscopic 3D compatible PC video games.  Is your favourite S-3D game not listed here?  Feel free to make submissions!  It's isn't 3D Ready untils gamers say it is.

MTBS Gallery Guide

Meant to be Seen's gallery features countless side by side stereoscopic 3D pictures and video game screen captures.  There are ways to view the images without manually downloading them first.  This guide shares some ideas on how to do this.

Stereoscopic 3D CG Art Capture

Beginners Guide
Advanced Guide

While these were originally written for an S-3D CG art contest we did at SIGGRAPH 2008, they still hold up and can be used today.

Hardware/Software Guides

In the PC gaming world, there are three software products responsible for making video games work in stereoscopic 3D.  DDD's Tridef Ignition stereoscopic 3D drivers, iZ3D's monitor and S-3D drivers, and NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision glasses and drivers.

Select the hardware or software your are using to find the appropriate guides:

Dynamic Digital Depth

iZ3D

NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision

Game Developers

S-3D Programming Guide (will be relinked shortly)

While we admit that this guide needs to be updated, much of it still holds water.  We encourage you to reach out to all S-3D driver developers to ensure your games are 3D compliant industry-wide.  Supporting just one solution on the market does NOT qualify as 3D Ready.
